Google Senior Battery Design Mechanical Engineer in Mountain View, California
Minimum qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, Materials Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
4 years of experience in creating 3D CAD model for battery cell internal structure or pack design including PCM/BMU for consumer electronics with 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, NX), or 3 years of experience with an advanced degree.
Experience working on mechanical characterization principles and techniques relevant to internal cell structure, manufacturing process, and battery materials and structures.
Experience in designing for manufacturability and assembly.
Preferred qualifications:
Master's or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, Materials Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software (e.g., ANSYS, Abaqus) for structural analysis and simulation.
Experience with battery management systems (BMS) integration considerations and thermal principles for pack design.
Experience with material selection for battery applications and working with battery cell manufacturers and suppliers.
Experience with regulatory requirements and safety standards for battery systems.
Excellent problem-solving, investigative, critical thinking, and communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate in a team environment.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $144,000-$211,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Develop detailed 3D models and 2D drawings of battery cells (pouch, prismatic) and battery pack assemblies, consider factors such as robustness from mechanical shock or vibration, energy density, power density, safety, manufacturability, and cost.
Analyze the structural integrity of battery cells and packs under various operating conditions. Conduct Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulations to predict mechanical stresses, deformations, and failure modes in battery cell and pack designs. Optimize designs based on simulation results.
Apply a thorough understanding of the internal components and architecture of various battery cell chemistries and cell structure (e.g., winding, stacking) to inform design decisions and ensure compatibility.
Create and maintain comprehensive design documentation, including 3D models, 2D drawings, specifications, Bill of Materials (BOM), and test reports.
Work with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration and optimal performance.
