rrPosition Summary:

r The University of Idaho - College Art and Architecture (CAA) and the Virtual Technology and Design (VTD) program seek a non-tenure track clinical assistant professor who can utilize advanced technologies in combination with the design process to create learning environments that support undergraduate foundational-design curricula. The candidate will be proficient in many areas of the production of 2D and 3D computer graphics with extensive experience using current and emerging technologies used to produce virtual environments. Candidates should have a strong understanding of visual storytelling using technologies that support the entertainment, visualization and simulation industries while also being comfortable exploring new trans-disciplinary approaches that impact digitally integrated design processes.Candidates will be able to significantly contribute to the VTD program in one of the following four areas:

  • Interactive virtual environments: Designing and developing interactive virtual worlds for use in entertainment and non-entertainment activities (Information design, visualization, concept design, experience design, architecture, and industrial design).
  • Visualization: Addressing the complexities of envisioning and creating artefacts and virtual environments for spatial visualization (information design, visualization, computer science).
  • Storytelling: Addressing todays needs for communication and education and requirements of diverse audiences in real and virtual settings.
  • Digital Fabrication: Translation of virtual forms into physical artifacts and vice-versa. (industrial design, sculpture, computer science, concept design, architecture, engineering). Candidates for the position should be qualified to teach undergraduate VTD design studios courses and be able to integrate their research activities in ways that complement the Mission and Vision of the VTD program as well as the College of Art and Architecture.

Teaching foundational design courses about production, design experience and integration of technology in a NASAD-accredited Virtual Technology and Design Program.

This includes teaching (not limited to):

  • Design principles
  • Animation and design
  • Storytelling
  • World building and design
  • Metaverse, Web 3.0
  • Game design
  • User experience and user interface design (UX/UI)
  • Exploration of AI tools
  • Clinical activities including engagement with industry to support student and program goals

rrMinimum Qualifications:

  • Terminal Masters or professional degree in a design discipline or related field.
  • Record of human-centered design work in teaching, research, or industry practice.
  • Evidence of digital production work using virtual technology.

rrPreferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of current digital tools, design practices, and visual communication principles.
  • Evidence of industry connections.
  • Evidence of creative design practice.
