Monroe Public Schools Boiler Operator/HVAC Technician in Monroe, Michigan

Job Summary: Monroe Public Schools is seeking a qualified Boiler Operator/HVAC Technician to join our team. This position is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of boiler systems and HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems across district facilities. The ideal candidate will ensure safe, efficient, and effective operation of these systems while supporting a comfortable and functional learning environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate, monitor, and maintain boilers, HVAC systems, and related equipment to ensure safe and efficient performance.
  • Perform regular inspections, maintenance, and repairs on boiler systems, furnaces, air conditioners, ventilation systems, and related mechanical equipment.
  • Troubleshoot malfunctions in heating and cooling systems, diagnosing and resolving operational issues.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance on HVAC and boiler equipment to minimize breakdowns and extend equipment life.
  • Adjust controls to regulate temperature, humidity, and airflow in district buildings for occupant comfort.
  • Monitor system performance and document readings, completing logs and reports as required.
  • Perform safety checks and ensure compliance with all applicable building codes, safety standards, and district policies.
  • Identify and recommend system upgrades or improvements to enhance efficiency and reliability.
  • Collaborate with maintenance staff, contractors, and vendors as needed to complete projects and repairs.
  • Assist with other building maintenance duties, including emergency responses as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Boiler Operator License (if applicable).
  • HVAC Technician Certification or equivalent experience in HVAC system operation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with boilers, HVAC systems, or similar mechanical systems.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems related to heating and cooling.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Working knowledge of energy management systems (EMS) and controls.
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Universal EPA Refrigerant Handling Certification.
  • Experience in a school or similar institutional setting.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform tasks requiring standing, bending, climbing ladders, and working in confined spaces.
  • Ability to work in hot or cold environments and at heights.
