Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Possession of a permanent Louisiana Dietitian/Nutritionist license plus three years of licensed experience in public health nutrition or dietetics in a clinical setting.

FUNCTION OF WORK:

To serve as a licensed nutritionist responsible for implementing nutrition services through the supervision of nutrition staff in a parish health unit.

LEVEL OF WORK:

Supervisor.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Broad from a Public Health Nutritionist Manager. Other reporting relationships may be approved by SCS.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Direct over lower-level Public Health Nutritionists and nutrition support staff. Other reporting relationships may be approved by SCS.

LOCATION OF WORK:

Louisiana Department of Health, Office of Public Health.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:

Differs from Public Health Nutritionist 3 by the presence of direct supervisory responsibilities.

Differs from Public Health Nutritionist Manager by the absence of responsibility for managing Nutrition Services in a region.

Examples of Work

This position serves as a Public Health Nutritionist Supervisor/Registered Dietitian (RD) within Louisiana Department of Health Region 8. Primary program served is the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), along with other public health programs as needed. Maintenance of the RD credential and Louisiana licensure is required to perform functions of work, per USDA federal program regulations.

The duties and responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Provides supervisory support and oversight to Public Health Nutritionists, Health Educators, and/or Nutrition Educators.

  • Provides oversight of clinical services to high risk WIC participants.

  • Conducts nutritional assessments of WIC participants, determines nutritional risk, counsels according to nutritional risk and prescribes food packages according to individual need(s) and program allowances.

  • As a Registered Dietitian, independently performs high-risk nutrition counseling services and referrals.

  • Stays abreast of local community assistance programs/offerings.

  • Completes detailed LAWIN (WIC management information system) notes.

  • Performs walk-in and scheduled infant and pediatric formula changes as needed.

  • Oversees the formula inventory system for assigned location(s).

  • Serves as a subject matter expert in maternal and child nutrition.

  • Serves as a preceptor for eligible dietetic interns working towards RD credentials and licensure.

  • Monitors nutrition education classes for quality and offers feedback to ensure accurate and adequate nutrition education.

  • Manages the performance and development of direct reports. Provides consultation services on all areas of WIC policy and procedure.

  • Travels through Region 8 (Union, Lincoln, Jackson, Ouachita, Caldwell, Morehouse, Richland, Franklin, West and East Carroll, Madison and Tensas parishes).

  • Provides and develops training, professional development, and enrichment activities for staff to grow within WIC program and public health nutrition services.

  • Manages overall clinic flow to ensure adequate staff coverage and smooth operation at all times.

  • Approves leave, recommends hiring and promotions within program area, and determines work assignments.

  • Works with the Regional Nutritionist (Public Health Nutritionist 5/Public Health Nutritionist Manager) in strategic planning for future programming needs, including but not limited to: staffing levels, target participation goals, communication and outreach plans, identification of service gaps and the remedy thereof, improvements in best practices in service delivery, and resources needed to improve health outcomes for WIC program participants.

  • Participates in special projects as assigned.

  • Provides nutrition support and expertise to other public health programs.

  • Response duties in Special Needs Shelters and General Population Shelters (or location as assigned) during times of emergency.

  • Participates in professional continuing education through independent study and attendance at in-services, workshops, and conferences at the local, state, and national levels to maintain competency and registration status with the Commission of Dietetic Registration and licensure with the State of Louisiana.

  • Serves on local/area coalitions, task/project forces, etc. as appropriate to support community population health and nutrition best practices.
