Position Summary:
The Technology Manager - Pulp & Utilities will lead Sylvamo's digital transformation initiatives for advanced process controls (APC) to optimize pulp, power, and recovery operations. They will oversee the technical design, project development, implementation, and maintenance of Sylvamo's APC solutions. This role combines in-depth technical expertise with innovative technologies to enhance complex pulp, power, and recovery processes.
By collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, this position aims to deliver significant improvements in process stability, energy efficiency, and equipment reliability. The successful implementation of APCs will drive productivity, cost savings, and continuous improvement across Sylvamo's operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Leadership:
Guiding Technical Direction: Defining and implementing the technical components for advanced process control projects, choosing appropriate technologies and methodologies.
Ensuring Quality: Defining and implementing best practices, conducting product reviews, and ensuring the software is well-designed, scalable, and maintainable.
Sustainability: Responsible for developing an enterprise approach and working closely with mill teams to sustain pulp, power & recovery APCs throughout the Sylvamo fleet of mills.
Alignment: Coordination of efforts with the paper mill APCs to enable mill-wide optimization capabilities.
Problem Solving: Identifying and resolving technical issues, collaborating with the team to find effective solutions.
Staying Up to Date: Keeping abreast of the latest technologies and industry trends.
Security Audits: Conducting security audits to identify vulnerabilities and ensure the security of applications and systems.
Growing Capabilities:
Mentoring and Coaching: Establish a collaborative network among control engineers, offering guidance and fostering a supportive team environment. Provide coaching on skills such as loop tuning, control design, troubleshooting, and advanced process control fundamentals.
Communication: Serving as an intermediary between the vendor product development teams and key stakeholders, including product managers, clients, and senior management.
Enhance Skills and Knowledge: Work with organizational change management, vendors, and mills to create best practices, training materials, and workshops to improve the skill level of control teams throughout the organization.
Project Execution:
Planning and Prioritization: Assisting with project planning, task assignment, and prioritization to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.
Monitoring Progress: Follow project progress, identify potential roadblocks, and take proactive steps to mitigate risks
Required Skills and Knowledge:
Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, electrical engineering, control systems engineering, or related field. A master’s degree or Ph.D. is preferred.
15+ years of experience in process control and use of APCs, with a strong background in design, implementation, performance evaluations, and maintenance of advanced control systems. Experience with the use of APCs in the pulp and paper industry is strongly preferred.
Prior leadership experience both directly and indirectly.
Extensive knowledge of advanced process controls (APCs), model predictive controls (MPCs), single input single output controls (SISO), and distributed control systems (DCS), including configuration, maintenance, and optimization.
Proficiency with various device and sensor technologies, measurement principles, and data acquisition systems along with the ability to learn new and unfamiliar systems.
Proficiency in process modeling, control theory, and optimization techniques.
Proficiency in regulatory controls, product measurement analyzers, controls systems, and the modeling of predictive controls is required.
Advanced skills in process control software and tools such as Valmet, Andritz, Voith or equivalent platforms.
Familiarity with industrial automation systems, SCADA, and PLCs.
Strong background in data analytics, including the use of machine learning and statistical analysis to design and enhance control strategies.
Experience with data analytics and industrial automation systems.
Proven ability to lead and manage complex technical projects, from concept through implementation and optimization.
Strong verbal and written communication and collaboration skills.
Ability to communicate complex subjects in a manner that is understood across stakeholders at all impacted levels of the organization.
Demonstrated capability to mentor and develop technical talent within the organization.
Relevant certifications in process control, automation, or data analytics are preferred.
English: Proficient: Additional benefit if proficient in Portuguese, French, or Swedish.
This position requires travel to manufacturing sites in Brazil, France, Sweden, and the United States. During project development and implementation, travel could be greater than 50%.
