Job Overview

Overview

The Principal Systems Engineer role is the subject matter expert in Hypervisor and OS technologies. This position will serve as domain expert, mentor, and technical escalation point for junior staff. This role will lead engineering, design, and optimization efforts across the compute domain. This includes ensuring the availability of client/server applications, configuring new implementations, and developing processes and procedures for ongoing management of the server environment. Scope of responsibilities include server hardware, Windows Server operating systems, Linux operating systems, hypervisor platforms, Cloud vendors, Microsoft back-office technologies, and 3rd party infrastructure software and applications.

Responsibilities

  • Infrastructure Design & Deployment: Architect and manage data center compute environments, including on-prem (HPE, Nutanix) and public cloud (AWS) solutions for scalability and redundancy.

  • Operations & Performance Management: Manage ongoing operations in on-prem and public cloud environments, ensuring high availability, fault tolerance, and security in a 24/7 environment.

  • Incident Response & Monitoring: Troubleshoot and resolve issues across hardware, software, OS, and application-related domains. Conduct performance monitoring, system health checks, and alerting solution evaluations to ensure proactive incident response and platform health tracking.

  • Hypervisor Solutions: Design, implement, and optimize hypervisor platforms. Establish best practices for maintenance, performance tuning, and drive innovation across virtualization solutions.

  • Cloud Integration: Design and integrate public cloud environments, enabling seamless workload mobility and optimized on-prem/cloud interactions.

  • Automation & Orchestration: Develop automated provisioning, configuration management, and system recovery using Terraform, Ansible, PowerShell, or similar tooling.

  • Optimization: Continuously monitor system performance and find efficiencies to enhance resource utilization, minimize downtime, and control costs. Conduct trend analyses, capacity forecasting, cost-benefit analyses, and make recommendations to optimize total cost of ownership across platforms.

  • Leadership & Mentorship: Provide technical leadership, mentor engineers, define staff development strategies, and establish domain best practices. Partner with leadership to prioritize work efforts.

  • Project Management: Lead assigned projects, collaborating with vendors and internal teams, to ensure successful delivery. Develop and maintain documentation across the compute domain.

  • Research & Development: Evaluate emerging technologies, identify opportunities to leverage new solutions, and drive innovation in compute infrastructure operations.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field, or equivalent combination of experience/education.

  • 10+ years in Windows and Linux administration, engineering, and architecture

  • 10+ years with virtualization technologies (VMware, Nutanix and associated tools)

  • 5+ years designing and managing private and public-cloud platforms

  • Expert knowledge of Windows and Linux Server operating systems and associated technologies (Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, RDS, LDAP)

  • Proficiency with HPE, UCS, and Nutanix server platforms

  • Strong scripting skills: PowerShell, Python

  • Proficiency in infrastructure automation tools: Terraform, Ansible

  • Strong understanding of networking: VPCs, VPNs, DNS, firewalls, and load balancing

  • Excellent troubleshooting, problem resolution, and analytical skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively across technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Effective leadership and team collaboration

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field.

  • AWS Certified SysOps Administrator, AWS Solutions Architect (Associate or Professional)

  • VCP (VMware Certified Professional), VCAP (Advanced Professional)

  • Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE)

The posted pay range is for a 40-hour workweek (1.0 FTE). The actual rate of pay offered within this range may depend on several factors, such as FTE, skills, knowledge, relevant education, experience, and market conditions.
