Job ID360441 LocationTwin Cities Job FamilyAcademic Full/Part TimeFull-Time Regular/TemporaryRegular Job Code9546 Employee ClassAcad Prof and Admin About the Job The Aliota laboratory at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary medicine is seeking a postdoc to help lead multidisciplinary projects in RNA virus evolution, transmission, pathogenesis, and therapeutic development. The candidate for this position will primarily work on projects related to evolution and transmission dynamics (50% time) but will have opportunities to work on other interesting projects that may emerge (20%). The position is available as early as June 2024. The successful applicant will also assist with laboratory management duties, such as managing/training students and personnel (10% time); writing papers and giving scientific presentations (10%); and assisting with grant writing (5% time). The position will involve close collaboration with other research teams at the University of Minnesota and beyond. Duties will include sharing of research findings with these collaborators (5% time). Excellent written and oral communication skills are therefore essential. Qualifications Required qualifications: PhD in microbiology, virology, molecular biology, ecology, biochemistry, cellular biology, immunology or related field. The ability to multitask, learn new tasks, and organize many types of data from multiple projects accurately. The successful applicant should have a deep-seated interest in virology, be an excellent communicator, and have a strong desire to learn about and apply new technologies and data analysis. Biological safety level (BSL) 3 laboratory certification; certification for working with blood-borne pathogens. Both may be acquired upon hire. Working with samples that may contain the SARS-CoV-2 virus is an essential function of this position and it is strongly recommended that the successful applicant is vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2 (may be completed upon hire) to reduce the risk of lab-acquired infection and transmission to others in the lab. Desired qualifications: Applicant must understand complex concepts of immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, and virology. Experience with molecular biology techniques preferred. Experience in metagenomic sequencing preferred. This position involves using DNA sequencing to understand RNA virus transmission. Since management of large numbers of samples and interpretation of sequencing data are complex, an applicant with strong computer skills is preferred. Demonstrated ability to analyze large datasets and familiarity with programming languages like R and Python are strongly preferred.
