SHERPA Program Coordinator

The Opportunity

SHERPA is a specially trained team of peer recovery coaches offering guidance to individuals and families navigating the Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment system. SHERPA provides recovery, harm-reduction, and crisis service linkage and emotional support based on the principles of hope, wellness, dignity, and choice.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and develop schedules for covering the on-call shifts with partner hospitals and community referrals.

  • Assist the Program Supervisor in overseeing documentation; ensure that peers are completing reports in a timely and efficient manner for the Supervisor to review and aggregate.

  • Assist the Program Supervisor by attending hospital meetings as necessary and representing the Sherpa program.

  • Engage people in strengths-based, trauma-informed peer support at the very beginning stages of their individual recovery plans, primarily in a hospital emergency room setting.

  • Demonstrate active listening, respectful motivational questions, and treatment of people as the strongest resource in their own recovery.

  • Provide systems advocacy and guidance to individuals as they navigate the substance use disorder treatment system.

  • Follow up post hospital discharge.

  • Provide warm handoffs to treatment providers and/or recovery support services and other community resources

  • Effectively communicate with family, Sherpa Peers, hospital staff, and substance use treatment providers and community supports.

  • Document utilization and outcomes with respect and confidentiality.

  • Foster environment of mutual respect, cooperation, and teamwork.

  • Represent the Sherpa Program in the community with enthusiasm and professionalism.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required. Undergraduate degree a plus.

  • NYS Certified Recovery Peer Advocate (CRPA or CRPA-P) preferred.

  • Familiarity with recovery skills, support services, and local community resources required, including substance use disorder prevention, treatment, and referrals.

  • At least 2 years experience working in substance use or mental health recovery services as a provider or recipient required.

  • A valid New York State driver's license with a safe and responsible driving history.

  • Intermediate skills, including Microsoft Office (including Word, Outlook and Excel)

Additional Information

Schedule:

  • Full-time, 35 hours per week. Tuesday through Saturday, some evenings required.
