University of Miami Recovery Technician, Per Diem in Miami, Florida

The Eye Bank at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute is currently seeking a per diem Recovery Technician. The incumbent in this position is responsible for retrieving and processing ocular tissue for surgical and research use. This technician will recover tissue throughout South Florida at hospitals, funeral homes, and medical examiner offices. The Technician is also responsible for limited laboratory duties.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. (40%) Retrieve tissue from legally consented donors using appropriate procedures as defined by the FLEB policy and procedure manual.2. (15%) Review cases available for corneal removal at local ME office. Read and screen medical charts, speak to investigators, medical examiners, and law enforcement to carefully determine medical suitability of potential donors.3. (10%) Obtain accurate donor medical information and complete all documentation required for donor records. Follow-up on medical records from weekend and evening recoveries.)4. (10%) Distribute tissue as needed to surgeons and researchers.5. (10%) Perform specular microscopy on surgical quality corneas to obtain endothelial cell count.6. (10%) Process corneas for DSAEK, DMEK and long term preservation in cornea lab as needed.7. (3%) Process and package blood for serology testing. Receive results and file in donor record.8. (2%) Prepare instrument kits for sterilization and deliver and retrieve in a timely manner from 6th floor central supply.9. (1%) Perform and maintain documentation of regular laboratory cleaning schedules.

Minimum Qualifications (Essential Requirements):

  1. High School Diploma Required. Bachelors Degree in Biological Science or equivalent with courses in human anatomy, physiology, and other related sciences preferred. Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.

  2. One Year of lab or relevant experience required.

  3. Good manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.

  4. Willingness and ability to travel to all recovery sites.

  5. Maintain valid driver’s license and car insurance.
