How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region:

The Training Specialist will provide outstanding instructional design and development of content, and in-person training support of Environmental Services workforce development and continuous improvement initiatives.

What you would do in this job

  • Design, develop and maintain training content for training programs using a variety of instructional methods and media.

  • Author, publish and maintain standard operating procedures and additional types of job aids, including checklists, flowcharts.

  • Participate in the administration and coordination of training programs.

  • Analyze training needs in assigned situations to determine the difference between the actual and desired performance. Analysis may include interviews, surveys, and observation of performance.

  • Build and maintain positive relations with Environmental Services managers and supervisors to uncover and respond to training needs.

  • Facilitate instructor-led training events with internal and external trainers.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

An Associate's Degree in technical writing, education, human resources development, industrial relations, psychology, social sciences, business, or a related fieldAND five (5) or more years of experience designing and developing training content and job aids.

OR

Bachelor's degree in instructional design, technical writing, education, human resources development, industrial relations, psychology, social sciences, business, or a related field AND three (3) or more years of experience designing and developing training content and job aids.

OR

Master's Degree or certification in instructional design, technical writing, education, human resources development, industrial relations, psychology, social sciences, business, or a related field AND one (1) or more years of experience designing and developing training content and job aids.

OR

What additional skills and experience would be helpful in this job (desired qualifications):

  • Experience working with subject matter experts in wastewater treatment systems or other industrial settings.

  • Proficient in the use of Articulate 360, Questionmark Online Assessment Platform, Adobe Creative Cloud, SumTotal Learning Management System, and Adobe Captivate for authoring, editing, and implementing training content and assessments.

  • Experience creating standard operating procedures.

  • Proficient in the use of Arbortext Editor and Arbortext Content Manager.

  • Experience using audio and video equipment in industrial settings.

  • Completion of OSHA 10 and/or OSHA 30 training.

  • Skilled at authoring high-stakes assessments.

  • Skilled at leading job and task analysis using the Developing a Curriculum (DACUM) method.

What knowledge, skills, and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job:

  • Knowledge of job aid types and application of job aids.

  • Knowledge of instructional design authoring tools and techniques.

  • Knowledge of Sumtotal® learning management systems (LMS).

  • Knowledge of performance-based assessment design and development, and knowledge assessment design and development.

  • Skilled at authoring standard operating procedures and accompanying trainer notes for use during structured on-the-job training in the field.

  • Skilled at troubleshooting issues with display monitors and audio, tablets, and laptops before and during training sessions.

  • Interpersonal skills with the ability to develop strong working relationships.

  • Verbal and written communication skills to include public speaking.

  • Organizational and administrative skills.

  • Skills in Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and SharePoint.

  • Ability to inspect and set up safety training equipment for training use in classroom and work settings.

What your work environment would be:

Work is regularly performed in a normal office environment but may occasionally be performed in the field. Position is occasionally required to travel locally by car. There is occasional exposure to wet, humid conditions, moving parts or equipment, fumes or airborne particles, and outdoor weather conditions. Position may occasionally work in high, precarious places. Position is exposed to moderate noise. Position may set up training equipment which involves lifting, bending and twisting. Position may enter confined spaces on occasion.
