Join the forefront of technological innovation at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory's Electronics Systems Department, housed within the esteemed Technology Innovation Directorate (TID). We are seeking an astute PCB Layout Designer to play a crucial role in the development of advanced electronics systems. These systems are the backbone of a wide array of scientific experiments and facilities, pushing the envelope of technological capabilities and expanding the horizons of scientific knowledge.

In this role, you will be designing PCBs targeting state-of-the-art solutions for embedded systems, high-speed digital, and low noise analog design. You'll have the unique opportunity to contribute to national premier scientific research, working on projects that challenge the conventional limits of technology and knowledge. Your work will enable groundbreaking discoveries and support the advancement of scientific endeavors at a global scale.

Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.

Your specific responsibilities include:

  • Design and execute the placement and routing of complex PCBs, catering to both digital and analog electronics, ensuring optimal performance and reliability.

  • Continuously update your knowledge of high-speed and controlled impedance routing techniques to apply the latest advancements in PCB design

  • Create and maintain our library of component symbols and PCB footprints for Altium, enhancing design efficiency and accuracy.

  • Accurately estimate project timelines for PCB layout phases, considering detailed schematics and mechanical constraints, to facilitate effective project planning.

  • Work closely with hardware engineers and mechanical designers to integrate physical and electrical aspects of PCB designs, fostering interdisciplinary innovation and efficiency.

  • Engage in cross-functional collaboration with instrumentation development teams within SLAC and partner scientific institutions to share knowledge and drive technological advancements.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, or related field and three years of hands-on experiencein PCB layout, demonstrating a track record of successful projects from concept to production; or a combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Proven proficiency in Altium Designer for PCB design

  • Familiarity with routing high-speed signals (>10 GHz) and a foundational understanding of signal integrity principles, with eagerness to develop and optimize performance in complex systems

  • Understanding of power integrity/power distribution

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

The expected pay range for this position is $104,000 to $140,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
