JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State Brandywine's Enrollment Management Office is seeking a Part-Time Financial Aid Counselor for its busy Office of Student Aid. Reporting directly to the Coordinator of Student Financial Resources and Solutions, the Financial Aid Counselor is responsible for providing lead support for students with financial aid questions and/or issues. These openings require a significant working knowledge of federal, state, and institutional sources of financial aid and regulations, policies, and procedures.

Job Duties Typical duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing in-depth advising and counseling to students and parents on financial aid eligibility, application procedures and policies, and monitoring student aid progress.

  • Serving as the front-line lead in FAFSA corrections, completion of the verification process, navigating LionPath, providing dependency and special circumstance reviews, and assisting with residency appeals.

  • Counseling students and families and providing alternative loan options.

  • Serving on the campus Finance and Balances Team to assist with retention efforts.

  • Providing direct outreach to students to offer options for outstanding balances, including but not limited to, Open Doors funds, Emergency and Retention Scholarship options.

  • Serving as liaison to the University Park’s Office of Student Aid.

  • Preparing, reviewing, and responding to a broad range of financial aid correspondence.

  • Certifying veteran students using the VA Enrollment Manager System and assisting with VA audits.

  • Providing twice a year reviews for SAP appeals (Satisfactory Academic Progress) appeals, and actively utilize Starfish by providing notes regarding student aid processes, reviews, issues, and referrals.

  • Providing proactive interventions to deferred fall students to ensure their aid is ready prior to January and actively monitor Slate inbox to answer questions from incoming students and parents.

  • Preparing and processing of various forms; coordinating travel and meeting arrangements; maintaining, securing, and disposing of financial aid records and related confidential material.

  • Providing back-up phone support for the Admissions Unit, and participating in campus admissions events, and other campus activities as needed.

    The opening is based at the Brandywine Campus; however, flexible work arrangements, such as remote or hybrid work opportunities, may be considered. This opening is part-time, typically up to 24 hours per week. Pay will be commensurate with education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • 1+ years related experience and a Bachelor’s Degree or higher or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.

  • Previous experience working in higher education and experience as a Financial Aid Counselor are strongly preferred.

  • Employment with the University for this job will require successful completion of the Pennsylvania (PA) Publicly Available Clearances: PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check, and the FBI Criminal History Background Check.

    Competencies critical to success in this job are:

  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office 365 Suite (especially Word, Access, and Excel), web-based applications, and databases.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication and organizational skills.

  • The ability to communicate in an effective and professional manner with detailed and sensitive information; a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.
