Department Summary:

MITRE's Infrastructure and Networking Innovation Center is looking for a Group Leader (GL) for its Communications Network Engineering and Analysis department, L111. L111 is a department with staff that offers a diverse set of skills and expertise spanning an array of networking disciplines from enterprise network operations to advanced tactical networking applications to 5G. Our staff are active across many direct work programs, research activities and external outreach while contributing to MITRE's mission of Solving Problems for a Safer World. In coordination with the Department Manager, the Group Leader will provide people and technical leadership to department staff across multiple networking disciplines who comprise L111’s core competency areas.

Additionally, the Group Leader will have an opportunity to work with the Department Manager and Innovation Center leadership team to build relationships inside and outside of MITRE for developing capability areas and solutions for our customers. The right candidate will be a technical leader who enjoys mentoring and is comfortable in a fast-paced team environment.

Selected candidates will serve as direct supervisor for up to 10 department staff, from early career hires to principal staff. In addition, GLs are expected to work in partnership with the department and division leadership team guiding technical direction, shaping the work program, and growing the workforce. GLs must balance their department management and leadership roles with other direct work program commitments.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Actively contribute to technical work programs developing high quality technical products resulting in significant customer impact

  • Mentor and provide technical support to staff, conducting regular performance and development conversations and communication with Project or Task Leads on performance

  • Identify appropriate project opportunities where staff can leverage and develop skills and create impact

  • Ensure staff work is aligned with division and department strategy and maximize staff potential, development, and engagement

  • Foster a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative work environment

  • Engage in recruiting activities such as interviewing, hiring, and onboarding to grow the department's capacity and capabilities

  • Develop a deep understanding of the department's and innovation center's capabilities to be able to make connections across the innovation center and MITRE Labs

  • Seek opportunities to collaborate across programs and facilitate open sharing of the work programs and technical knowledge areas with other managers and staff

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree and 8 years of related experience; or 6 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 3 years' experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US TS/SCI clearance

  • Demonstrated expertise and leadership in one or more of the department's focus areas:

  • Wireless and tactical networks, including 5G and satellite networking

  • Network security and management

  • Emerging network technologies including cloud, SDN, and NFV

  • Network modeling, simulation, emulation, and analysis

  • Motivation to expand knowledge and skills for self and others

  • Willingness to work with staff in multiple stages of their careers and across multiple disciplines

  • Broad knowledge of the department's and innovation center's work

  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent field of study and 8 years related experience

  • At least 2 years of leadership or mentoring experience

  • Experience developing, proposing, and executing research

  • Ability to articulate networking challenges, discuss critical issues and identify gaps

  • Familiarity with MITRE Labs, MITRE National Security Sector and MITRE Public Sector organizations and the capabilities they support
