Job Summary and Qualifications

*Work Schedule: 12 hour days with call*

The RN in Recovery/PACU performs direct patient care within the scope of the Registered Nurse Practice Act, with emphasis on the post-anesthesia care patients/surgical services.

What you will do in this role:

  • Provide immediate post-surgical care of infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients (excluding critically ill infants and children) who have had general anesthesia, epidural/spinal anesthesia and IV sedation

  • Provide post anesthesia care to patients receiving high-risk intravenous therapies and blood components

  • Maintain high quality (age specific) care for adolescent, adult and geriatric patients as assigned

  • Monitor all patients for airway and pain management

  • Proficient in interpretation of EKG changes, lab values and hemodynamic monitoring

  • Use therapeutic communication in daily practice

  • Maintain a safe and therapeutic PACU environment

  • Promote a supportive PACU environment

  • Implement and direct care, using the nursing process with emphasis on the needs of individual PACU patients

  • · Evaluate the effectiveness of the nursing process

  • Provide emotional support of the patient and significant others to make informed choices regarding health care

  • Delegate tasks to the appropriate caregiver

  • Participate in surgical services specific initiatives and process improvement Provide supervision of new employees, patient care assistants, vocational nurses, nurse technicians, student nurses and/or nurse externs

What qualifications you will need:

  • At least 1 year of recent RN PACU acute care hospital experience

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Spt must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date

  • PALS Pediatric Adv Life Supt must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date

  • Registered Nurse in the state of Texas or compact state license

  • Bachelors Degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred

Program Requirements:

  • All seasonal RNs are required to work a minimum of 72 hours per pay period during the seasonal period.

  • Within a close geography, you may be asked to float to another facility that has an emergent staffing need.

  • Four (4) weekend shifts are required each 4 week schedule period.

  • During the course of the 32-week period, the employee is required to work two (2) holiday shifts (defined by Department Manager or designee).

  • Seasonal Staff are PRN status employees and are subject to first call-off. There are no guaranteed hours by the hospital.

  • Seasonal Staff will not be eligible for benefits, except 401(k) and retirement contribution per the PRN policy.

  • Seasonal Staff will not be eligible for extra shift bonuses (D1/CND, D2/ECD, and D3/EVD)

  • Registered Nurses who are in the Seasonal program will have one opportunity to pass the clinical competency evaluation.

  • Current FT/PT & PRN Level 3 employees are not eligible to join the Seasonal program for 2024-2025 with the exception of RNs that participated in the Seasonal program in the previous year.

  • Current employees of HWS are not eligible for the seasonal program.

  • Shifts may vary based on the needs of the department.
