Job Summary and Qualifications

A court liaison for mental health acts as a bridge between the court system and mental health service providers, primarily responsible for assessing individuals with mental health concerns involved in legal proceedings, connecting them to appropriate treatment options, and coordinating communication between the court and mental health agencies to ensure proper case management and support. Includes tasks like scribing Certificate of Medical Examination (CME) for Physicians, filing paperwork, tracking case status, and collecting information for court appearances.

What you will do in this Role:

  • Conducting initial mental health evaluations of individuals appearing in court to identify potential mental health issues impacting their legal case.

  • Providing recommendations to the court regarding appropriate mental health treatment plans, including medication management, therapy, or inpatient care based on assessment findings. Understanding various involuntary admissions via police department and court ordered services.

  • Coordinating with mental health providers to ensure individuals are actively engaged in treatment plans, monitoring progress, and addressing any barriers to care.

  • Communicating with judges, probation officers, attorneys, and families regarding the mental health status of individuals involved in cases, providing updates on treatment progress, and advocating for necessary accommodations.

  • Identifying and connecting individuals with relevant community resources like housing assistance, employment support, or substance abuse treatment programs as needed.

  • Responding to immediate mental health crises that may arise within the court system, providing support and facilitating necessary crisis interventions.

  • Educating court staff, law enforcement, and the community about mental health issues, treatment options, and the role of a court liaison.

What qualifications you will need:

  • A Master's Degree in Social Work, Psychology, or a related field with experience in mental health assessment and treatment.

  • License required - LMSW, LPC, LPC-A, LCSW

  • Understanding of criminal justice system procedures, court processes, and legal terminology for involuntary mental health patients.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with individuals experiencing mental health issues, court personnel, and service providers.

  • Ability to manage complex caseloads, track progress, and coordinate multiple services. Ensuring accuracy in case information and document filing

  • Confidence in advocating for individuals with mental health needs within the court system.

  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross BLS required

  • Must complete restraint and seclusion training as well as techniques to address aggressive or threatening behavior (as outlined in Rule 415.257 of the Texas Administrative Code) prior to assuming direct care responsibilities, if the employee does not provide proof of current SAMA certification
