We are seeking a Director of Mechanical Engineering to support a rapidly growing Mechanical Engineering/Manufacturing and 3D Printing business. You will work in a state-of-the-art 108,000 SQFT facility overseeing a team of six mechanical engineers. This role supports the VP of Engineering in several key areas, including people and team management, technical management, quality and manufacturing management, administration and customer/vendor management, and security management.
Responsibilities
Lead, manage, and mentor a team of mechanical engineers with diverse backgrounds.
Perform performance reviews and hold team meetings to ensure high situational awareness.
Manage, acquire, and provision all necessary resources such as people, tools, and equipment to meet critical schedule milestones.
Track and maintain oversight of all projects, ensuring they stay on schedule and within budget, and take corrective actions as necessary.
Review and critique all technical drawings produced by the mechanical engineering team and organize effective peer reviews to identify and mitigate design, quality, and manufacturability risks.
Coordinate between Mechanical Design Team, Environmental Testing, and Manufacturing teams.
Assist individual team members with their design work or take on design work directly as needed.
Ensure team adherence to ISO design procedures and make necessary changes to design procedures.
Promote best design practices and ensure team members share and adopt innovative ideas and techniques.
Review and ensure seamless and error-free transfer of mechanical design data to Manufacturing Engineering before building prototypes.
Promote close and collaborative working relationships with Manufacturing by enlisting their opinions and reviewing design work.
Conduct technical and project management briefings for customers as required.
Foster and maintain good and trusting relationships with third-party vendors.
Perform all administrative duties necessary for the efficient functioning of the team, including pay reviews, time and vacation approvals, and travel authorization.
Ensure team compliance with all security procedures, including the handling and dissemination of CUI marked materials.
Essential Skills
Management and leadership experience
Mechanical design expertise
Proficiency in SolidWorks and SolidWorks Composer
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Bachelor's or MS in Mechanical Engineering
5-10 years of experience in leading and managing small to midsize teams of mechanical engineers
Experience in designing small to large mechanical enclosures housing electronic sub-assemblies and components to meet MIL-STD, specifically rackmount chassis for compute and storage servers
Experience with sheet metal design, rugged systems, and EMI testing
Experience with MIL-STD 810G/H and testing procedures
Experience in electronic packaging, electro-mechanical design, sheet metal fabrication techniques, and 3D modeling concepts
Adept at interpreting customers' ideas and requirements into product design requirements while adhering to governing design procedures (ANSI Y14.5)
Ability to model projects and their cost in terms of time, materials, and other indirect costs for budgeting
Ability to obtain a Secret Level Clearance
Work Environment
You will work five days onsite supporting a team of six mechanical engineers and report directly to the VP of Engineering. The facility is a state-of-the-art 108,000 SQFT space with a large manufacturing and warehouse floor. The environment is highly collaborative, with strong teamwork between engineering, manufacturing, and production teams.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $76.92 - $81.73/hr.
