AON Risk Engineer in Makati City, Philippines

Risk Engineer

What the day will look like

  • Coordination with Account Manager as to occupancy, survey date, and agenda.

  • Preparation of Travel Request Form, coordination of car service, looking/arrangement of flight options, and looking/booking of accommodation options.

  • Conduct initial assessment of possible requirements as to fire protection (e.g. design parameter, possible hazards)

  • Survey proper includes the following activities:

  • Introduction and discussion of agenda

  • Discussion on topics like:

  • Operation, Occupancy and Process

  • Construction (Year, Materials, Fire Separation)

  • Perimeter Exposure

  • Security and Fire Detection

  • Fire Protection (Special Extinguishment, Sprinkler System, Portable Fire Extinguisher, Standpipe System, Fire Department)

  • Hazards (Electrical, Ignitable Liquid, Compressed Gas, Storage, Spare Parts, Heat-producing Equipment, Refrigeration, HVAC, IT Server)

  • Management Programs (Emergency Preparedness, Business Continuity, Smoking Policy, Safety & Housekeeping, Critical Equipment Maintenance Program, Firefighting Equipment Maintenance Program, Firefighting Equipment Impairment Procedure, General Contractor Management, Hot Work)

  • Natural Perils (Earthquake, Typhoon, Flood, Lightning)

  • Loss history

  • Update on previous recommendations

  • Future plans

  • Document review

  • Process Diagram

  • Plant Layout

  • Electrical Single Line Diagram

  • Fire Suppression System Layout

  • FDAS Layout

  • Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Control Report

  • Fire Safety Maintenance Report

  • Fire Safety Inspection Certificate

  • Maintenance plan or records of firefighting equipment (special extinguishment, sprinkler system, standpipe system, portable fire extinguisher)

  • Maintenance plan or records of critical equipment (switchgear, transformer, generator sets, lightning protection, welding machine, oven, refrigeration, HVAC)

  • Documented procedures for Emergency Preparedness, Business Continuity, Smoking Policy, Safety & Housekeeping, Critical Equipment Maintenance Program, Firefighting Equipment Maintenance Program, Firefighting Equipment Impairment Procedure, Contractor Management and Hot Work.

  • Walkthrough of the facility:

  • Workshop

  • Office area

  • Production area

  • Perimeter

  • Electrical area (e.g. switchgear, transformer, generator set)

  • Ignitable liquid (e.g. paint, fuel)

  • Compressed gas (e.g. LPG, acetylene)

  • Storage area

  • Spare parts area

  • Heat-producing equipment (e.g. boiler, oven, welding machine)

  • Refrigeration

  • HVAC

  • Cooking area

  • Fire pump room and water tank

  • FDAS panel

  • CCTV room

  • Closing remarks to discuss observations and risk improvement recommendations.

  • Report writing includes the following activities:

  • Write the details gathered during the site visit as itemized above.

  • Download and review of the photographs taken during the site visit. Choose shots that could best represent the client’s interest.

  • Review of documents.

  • Mapping of the structures within the visited site using satellite imagery.

  • Check exposure on natural hazards (earthquake, typhoon, flood, surge, tsunami, volcanic eruption, lightning) from online tools (CatNet, Geo Risk)

  • Review standards (Philippine Fire Code, National Fire Protection Association) to support risk improvement recommendations.

  • Compose the risk improvement recommendations.

  • Compute for loss estimates

    Skills and experience that will lead to success

  • Engineering degree is a must preferably Mechanical or Electrical engineer, can be Civil but least priority.

  • Experience in insurance or brokerage firm, at least 2-3 years in the same function as Risk Engineer

  • Strong exposure in safety, insurance, fire protection

  • Role will be heavy on risk surveys and reporting, which should contain underwriting information, risk recommendation improvements and loss estimates.
