UW-MADISON DOIT Network Engineer in MADISON, Wisconsin

JOB REQUIREMENTS: Job Summary: The Network Operations Engineer provides advanced level technical support of network hardware, software, and services to ensure that DoIT provides the most efficient network connectivity possible. The Network Operations group is responsible for configuring and troubleshooting Cisco network switches and Palo Alto firewalls, configuring Citrix load-balancers, troubleshooting user wireless connectivity, and following up on daily reports and alarms as necessary. The Network Operations Engineer serves as a liaison between Network Services and campus departmental technical support staff. Responsibilities: Completes routine system planning, installation, analysis, and issue resolution to support institutional network connectivity and performance. 10% Designs, installs, and tests routine networks and associated hardware and software and communicates relevant information to appropriate entities 10% Develops and implements network management and monitoring tools, writing scripts to automate repetitive tasks 5% Researches network technologies and participates in procurement of new equipment and resources to meet program or project requests 10% Plans, directs, and schedules onsite logistics and resources for routine network development and maintenance projects 5% May train staff 10% Assists with the development and implementation of policies and procedures to align with strategic initiatives and unit objectives 20% Identifies, analyzes, troubleshoots, and documents routine network connectivity and performance issues according to established procedures, best practices, and regulations 30% Serves as an initial point of contact for internal and external individuals and groups, receives and responds to inquiries according to established policies and procedures, and may train staff and/or clients ***** OTHER EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: Required qualifications: -Experience working with network routers and routing protocols (three years preferred). -Experience working with Ethernet switches, virtual local area networks (VLANs) and spanning-tree protocols (three years preferred). -Experience working with firewalls and access control lists (i.e. Cisco, Palo Alto). -Experience working with wireless access points in an enterprise environment. In addition to required qualifications, the most qualified candidates may also have the following preferred qualification: -Knowledge of UNIX/Linux, and UNIX/Linux network utilities. -Knowledge of SNMP monitoring protocol. -Knowledge of DNS and DHCP. -Experience configuring and working with load balancers. Must be able to lift and carry materials weighing up to 20 lbs. unassisted, to stand, stoop, twist and bend as needed to carryout assigned duties.
