BWXT is currently seeking a Systems Engineering Manager for its Advanced Technologies location in Lynchburg, VA!

BWXT is People Strong, Innovation Driven – be part of BWXT’s innovation hub. BWXT Advanced Technologies designs, develops and delivers innovative new nuclear reactors, nuclear rocket propulsion systems, and radioisotope production systems for external and internal customers.

The Systems Engineering Manager will lead a department of approximately 12 Systems Engineers that is dynamic, growing, and geographically distributed. This position will be located at the Advanced Technologies office in Lynchburg, Virginia. Relocation benefits are available for this position.

The responsibilities encompass both functional management and direct program support. Functional management will include recruiting, hiring, on-boarding, training, coaching/mentoring, career development, and performance management for personnel matrixed to support projects. Direct program support will include Systems Engineering work planning and Systems Engineering subject matter expert reviews.

Job Description / Duties:

  • Build a supportive and collaborative team culture.

  • Grow the department and its structure, including the assignment of supervisors for teams within the department.

  • Oversee Systems Engineering support for projects, which includes:

  • Developing and maintaining product and system requirements

  • In collaboration with Chief Engineers and domain experts, developing and maintaining overall product architectures.

  • Defining and managing product and system interfaces.

  • Developing detailed product and system- verification and validation (V&V) plans.

  • Technical risk management.

  • Support Systems Engineering work planning for projects.

  • Perform Systems Engineering subject matter expert reviews.

  • Develop processes and procedures for performing Systems Engineering tasks.

  • Support development of overall Engineering design processes and procedures.

  • Ensure department staff have the resources to perform their assignments.

  • Develop department staff through training, mentoring, feedback, and work assignments.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships across the Engineering organization and with other interfacing BWXT organizations and external partners/stakeholders.

  • Monitor performance goals and provide feedback to direct reports.

Job Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required.

  • Must have a minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience, including five (5) in a Systems Engineering role.

  • Must have at least five (5) years of engineering leadership/supervisory experience.

  • Demonstrable ability to forge effective working relationships up, down, and across an organization is required.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as demonstrated by technical reports and presentations are required.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen with no dual citizenship.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.

Additional Desired Skillsets:

  • Familiarity with high temperature gas reactor technologies.

  • Familiarity with Systems Engineering processes and standard, such as the INCOSE Handbook, ISO/IEC/IEEE-15288, DOD Systems Engineering Guidebook, and/or NASA/SP-6105.

  • Familiarity with the requirements of quality programs such as ISO 9001, AS9100 and/or NQA-1.

  • Experience working with U.S. Government customer (e.g., DOD, DOE, NASA).

The base salary range for this position in [[stateProvince]] at the start of employment is expected to be between $[[custsalaryMin]] and $[[custsalaryMax]] per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,’ unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement.
