Responsibilities
The Civil Grading Superintendent is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of grading operations on highway and civil construction projects. This role requires extensive experience in earthwork, grading, large truck hauling operations, and coordinating multiple crews to ensure projects are completed on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with safety and quality standards.
Typical responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Operations Management:
Supervise and manage daily grading operations for civil construction projects.
Coordinate large-scale trucking and hauling operations to ensure material movement efficiency.
Monitor and direct multiple crews performing grading, excavation, and earthwork tasks.
Ensure proper execution of grading plans, including cut-and-fill operations, compaction, and final grading.
Work closely with project managers, engineers, and subcontractors to maintain productivity and quality.
Crew & Equipment Management:
Directly oversee foremen and field personnel, ensuring efficient workflow and adherence to project plans.
Assign work crews, schedule equipment, and ensure proper utilization of resources.
Conduct daily briefings to discuss goals, safety, and job-specific instructions.
Troubleshoot issues in the field, providing leadership and solutions to keep projects on track.
Safety & Compliance:
Enforce all safety regulations and company policies on job sites.
Conduct safety meetings, inspections, and risk assessments to identify and mitigate hazards.
Ensure compliance with DOT, OSHA, and environmental regulations.
Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and teamwork among all personnel.
Quality Control & Documentation:
Ensure all grading and hauling operations meet project specifications and quality standards.
Maintain daily logs, progress reports, and field documentation.
Communicate effectively with project stakeholders, including clients, inspectors, and regulatory agencies.
Identify and address potential issues before they impact the project schedule or budget.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- High School Diploma/GED + 12 years of relevant experience in civil/heavy highway grading operations, including supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
Expertise in grading, earthmoving equipment, haul truck logistics, and GPS grading technology.
OSHA 30 preferred.
Ability to read and interpret civil plans, specifications, and grading layouts.
Ability to work in outdoor environments, withstand weather conditions, and travel as needed.
The salary range for this position is between $200,000 - $225,000 per year depending on experience and/or education.
