Los Alamos National Laboratory Shift Manager (Manufacturing Manager 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

You will report to the CWF-CF Facility Group Leader. The Chemical Metallurgy Research (CMR) CMR Shift Manager will be responsible for the supervision and oversight of every aspect of CMR operations to include risk reduction activities. The CMR Shift Manager will assist the Facility Group Leader with all aspects of the safe and compliant nuclear facility operations at the CMR and will coordinate activities with facility groups and operations. The CMR Shift Manager will assist the Facility Group Leader with all aspects of personnel management, employee hiring processes, budget management and payroll, document revision management, work package planning, facility work authorization and facility safety oversight. A formal Qualification program is required.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Thorough knowledge of the Integrated Safety Management (ISM) line management responsibilities for their organization including but not limited to integrating safety into every task, pausing/stopping work, modeling exemplary behavior, fostering open communication, engaging workers in the field, rewarding positive behavior and addressing deficiencies through accountability. Integrated Safety Management (means worker health and safety, environment, security, and quality) is a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees and managers.

  • Demonstrated experience with fact finding, corrective actions and continuous improvement for organizational learning that results in the prevention of events and foster safe and secure work.

  • Demonstrated management experience in supporting and promoting the organization's vision, goals and strategies; aligns strategic priorities of one's own group with that of the larger organization.

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of facility Conduct of Operations, formality of operations and ability to work with the facility programs to ensure compliance, safety, LO/TO controls, security, quality and conduct of operations, engineering, maintenance and training in the performance of work.

  • Demonstrated experience managing and ensuring quality products and/or services within the facility; enforces adherence to quality standards; achieves balance between the need to meet both programmatic goals and quality standards.

  • Thorough knowledge and experience with budget management to include financial and human resource management, procurement, property and practices sound financial stewardship in all financial matters.

  • Strong communication skills providing daily open communication with workers that promotes an environment where workers feel comfortable bringing errors, mistakes, system weaknesses and upper management.

  • Familiarity with facility Technical Safety Requirements development, purpose, surveillance and the implementation verification review process for changes.

  • Thorough knowledge and experience developing, revising and approving technical work documents in accordance with the DOE writer's guide, or equivalent, ensuring technical accuracy and compliance with all nuclear standards, processes and procedures. Ability to coordinate with ALDWP archive records and handle CMR records management.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a related field from an accredited institution and 5 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

DOE Order 426.2: Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or related science, and 4 years' nuclear experience. Education or experience that is job related may be substituted on a case-by-case basis. The degree may fulfill 3 of the 4 years of nuclear experience on a one-for-one time basis

Training/Certifications: A formal Qualification program is required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience with the development or revision of technical procedures.

  • Knowledge of CMR processes and systems

  • DOE 'Q' clearance

Work Schedule: 4/10 Schedule Mon-Thurs

Work Environment: CMR is an older facility and although this job will primarily take place in the Operations Center inside the building. You may also need to work outdoors, in confined space, at heights, in a cold environment, working alone, working overtime or irregular schedule, working off-shift/rotating schedule, work in a noisy environment, work under unusual lighting conditions, work near electrical power supplies, work near sources of ionizing radiation, work near machinery with moving parts, fumes, headgear or head protection, safety glasses or eye protection, face shield or facial protection, hearing protection, safety shoes or protective foot gear.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. 426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
