What You Will Do

The Weapon Systems Engineering (W) Division provides systems engineering and program management to ensure the safety, reliability, and security of our nation's nuclear stockpile for the entire life cycle. (W) Division is responsible for leadership of activities in stockpile surveillance, assessment, certification, and life extension projects.

The W Division Nuclear Explosive Safety Office (W-NES) supports the Nuclear Weapons Program by providing nuclear explosive safety and design expertise to W Division and the Nuclear Security Enterprise.

Under the direction of the W-NES Office Lead, members of the LANL W-NES office:

Regularly serve as independent voting members on NNSA-led nuclear explosive safety assessments of all DOE and OST nuclear explosive operations.

Serve as voting members for NNSA-led Deliberate Unauthorized Use Review Teams.

Provide expert-level advice and consult with LANL weapons system groups responsible for the B61, W76, W78, and W88 on specific issues of nuclear weapon safety.

Serve as advisors to the NNSA voting member on DoD-led Nuclear Weapon Safety and Security Studies.

Provide safety-related input to DOE for both the active and inactive U.S. nuclear assets, as well as the U.K. Trident Program through JOWOG 44 interactions.

As necessary, work with weapons component SMEs and weapons response analysts on issues relevant to nuclear weapon safety.

Provide expert-level guidance to the Pantex Plant on Nuclear Explosives Safety issues, and the design of Nuclear Explosives Operations (NEOs) to meet DOE O452-series Nuclear Explosives Safety Standards.

Provide interpretation of DOE Nuclear Explosive and Weapon Surety (NEWS) Order requirements and ensure effective LANL system implementation.

Coordinate Pantex NES reviews and evaluations with appropriate LANL and DOE personnel.

Conduct management and peer reviews of NES evaluations.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Weapon Engineering Experience

Advanced-level knowledge of Nuclear Explosives and Pantex Nuclear Explosives Operations.

Advanced-level experience with nuclear weapon system assemblies and stockpile component assemblies.

Technical Leadership

Experience interacting with and presenting to LANL management, DOE and/or DoD nuclear weapons customers. Demonstrated ability to effectively plan and organize assignments. Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, and mentor junior team members. Demonstrated ability to effectively lead teams in a multi-discipline environment and interact effectively with a variety of organizations

Problem Solving

Ability to recognize technical problems, and effectively document/clearly communicate issues of concern.

Demonstrated ability to quickly assimilate and draw conclusions from large amounts of technical information

Communication and Teamwork

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and through written documentation. Experience in communicating with coworkers, laboratory management and customers. Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum supervision, as well as effectively as part of a team in a multi-discipline environment and interact effectively with a variety of organizations.

Education/Experience

Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of accuracy and completeness to ensure planned results are achieved.

  • Ability to recognize technical problems and conduct research, analysis and testing to generate suitable solutions and effectively document and communicate germane results.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively plan and organize assignments.

  • Experience interacting with and presenting to upper level LANL management and DOE nuclear weapons customers.

  • Experience with nuclear weapon system and component assemblies for testing and stockpile.

  • Active Q Clearance, or the ability to obtain an Active Q Clearance.

  • Master's Degree in Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or Chemical Engineering from an Accredited Board or Engineering and Technology (ABET) college or university program. Twelve years of industrial, military, Federal, state, or other directly related experience in nuclear weapons, nuclear weapons components, high consequence or nuclear safety operations.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment:

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

The ability to obtain an active Q clearance is required. This position is subject to the requirements of the Human Reliability Program (HRP). All candidates invited for an interview must consent to be in the HRP at the time of the interview. Only the selected candidate may be subject to the requirements of HRP, which includes a pre-employment background check, a counterintelligence-scope polygraph, medical examination including psychological evaluations, and drug/alcohol testing. Although the primary responsibilities of this position are associated with work at Los Alamos National Laboratory, occasional travel is required.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 (https://www.directives.doe.gov/directives-documents/400-series/0472.2-BOrder-chg1-pgchg) for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
