Los Alamos National Laboratory Group Leader (R&D Manager 4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Dynamic Experiments (M) Division is responsible for current and evolving explosive science and shock physics efforts as well as High Explosive (HE) fabrication, disposition and execution of hydrodynamic experiments. We support National Security through the characterization and application of energetic materials and understanding material response at extreme conditions to address conventional, nuclear, and homeland defense needs. The Division has a diverse portfolio of research, development, and application projects involving the dynamic properties of inert and reactive weapons materials. Competencies include the physics of shock waves in inert and energetic materials (EM), pressing, machining and inspection of EM into research and development (R&D) weapon system test components as well as R&D of EM, the shock initiation and detonation physics of explosives, the response of explosives to stimuli including electrical, chemical, mechanical, thermal, impact, shock and laser interactions, and the diverse application of high-explosive driven pulsed-power (HEPP) systems.

M-3, the Focused Experiments Group, designs, fields, and executes energetic, hazardous, and complex system and sub-system experiments for the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Nuclear Weapons and Global Security Programs at various high explosive firing sites at LANL. The Group works with a broad customer and stakeholder base in the research and development of energetic materials and dynamic response of materials and systems using various fast response time diagnostics and diagnostic suites. The Group is comprised of physicists, scientists, engineers, technologists, and specialists of varied backgrounds and disciplines.

The Group Leader (R&D Manager 4) will have responsibilities in the leadership of the scientific, technical, and administrative aspects of managing the group, which includes promoting personnel development, promoting program development activities, ensuring effective program execution and sound fiscal management, and ensuring that operations are conducted in a safe, secure, and environmentally sound manner. The group leader will team with other M-division managers to determine and promote long-range goals to ensure that the Division performs the highest quality research relevant to national needs.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Leadership

  • Advanced scientific and organizational leadership as evidenced by the ability to form, organize, administer, and lead large scientific projects or teams.

  • Record of promoting objectives in safety, security, quality, diversity in the workplace to include AA/EEO, environment and health.

  • Well-articulated leadership philosophy/strategy backed by personal examples.

  • Demonstrated commitment to the professional development and mentoring of employees.

  • Proven ability in leading teams and building rapport with employees, peers, and supervisors.

  • Proven experience in conflict resolution and in dealing with performance issues, including Human Performance Improvement principles.

Technical

Strong background and record of achievement in the physical sciences or engineering, with some understanding of HE experiments and Weapons Programs.

Scientific Research

Demonstrated scientific accomplishment in an area of scientific research relevant to the group, as evidenced by an outstanding publication record and/or demonstrable national or international reputation.

Communication

Strong record of effective written and verbal communication skills, as evidenced by application materials, letters of reference, and by seminars, briefings, presentations, and publications.

Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. in a science or engineering field may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

Safety & Security

  • Experience applying Human Performance Improvement Principles. Familiarity with DOE and LANL policies and procedures related to High Explosives safety, Hazard Analysis and conduct of operations.

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully interact with regulatory and oversight agencies and personnel.

Strategy & Collaboration

  • Evidence of an ability to influence scientific direction at the national level.

  • Demonstrated experience in building collaborative relationships, internally across groups, divisions and directorates, and externally with other laboratories, universities, and industrial partners.

  • Demonstrated experience in effective decision-making and creative problem solving.

Nuclear Weapon Program Initiatives

Knowledge of internal and external funding agencies (DOE, NNSA, DoD, DHS, etc.), including experience and engagement with programmatic sponsors.

System Usage

Financial management skills and commitment to good business practices as demonstrated by performance and accomplishments in previous work assignments.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
