Los Alamos National Laboratory Electrical Inspector (ESH Professional 1/2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the ESH Professional 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

ESH Professional 1 ($76,900 - $122,200)

The ESH Professional will work in the Hazardous Energy & Operations Group (HEO) of the Occupational Safety & Health Division (OSH) as an Electrical Inspector (EI). The EI's primary responsibility is to assist in the implementation of the OSH-HEO facility electrical inspection program under the direction of the Chief Electrical Inspector. The EI will assist in the implementation of the OSH-HEO facility electrical inspection program; inspect facility electrical installations; clarify and provide field interpretations of electrical codes, standards, and requirements. The EI will review new and upgraded facility plans, designs, and specifications to ensure compliance with NEC and other applicable electrical codes and standards and provide documented reviews; and keep records of all inspections, including the date of such inspections and a summary of any violations found to exist, and a record of the final disposition of all violations.

ESH Professional 2 ($92,300 - $151,000)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the ESH Professional 2 is a qualified, seasoned, experienced, career oriented professional with an advanced understanding of the National Electrical Code plus working knowledge of other related fields. Able to resolve a wide range of issues in creative ways. Works under limited direction; receives general instructions on new assignments.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • A minimum of six years of demonstrated experience in the electrical trade such as electrical inspector, journeyman electrician, master electrician, facility electrical engineer, or electrical contractor.

  • Demonstrated experience of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and demonstrated knowledge of the standard materials and methods used in the installation of electrical equipment.

  • Demonstrated experience of NFPA 70E requirements.

  • Demonstrated experience successfully communicating with workers, including craft personnel, engineers, project management, construction management, safety and stakeholders.

Additional Job Requirements for ESH Professional 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and knowledge of the standard materials and methods used in the installation of electrical equipment.

  • Working knowledge of NFPA 70E requirements.

  • Working knowledge successfully communicating with workers, including craft personnel, engineers, project management, construction management, safety and stakeholders.

  • Functional ability to understand and interpret various electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, and schematics.

Training/Certifications: Hold a certification of the International Code Council (ICC) or the International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI).

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of applicable sections of the LANL Engineering Standards Manual and Specifications.

  • Working knowledge reviewing new and upgraded facility plans, designs, and specifications to ensure compliance with the NEC and other applicable electrical codes.

  • Familiarity with the LANL Electrical Safety Program, or similar DOE laboratory electrical safety programs.

  • Working knowledge of office automation applications (i.e., computers, spreadsheets, database management, etc.).

  • Ability to make decisions and recommendations as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) that significantly affect the content, interpretation, and development of Laboratory electrical policies and programs.

  • Trained as an Electrical Safety Officer (ESO) or equivalent DOE programs.

  • Active Q clearance or ability to obtain and maintain an active DOE Q clearance.

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Depth perception, binocular vision, reading vision, ability to speak, ability to discriminate speech, ability to hear in a normal range (500 to 3000 hz), standing, walking, use stairs, fixed ladders and ladders up to six feet, ability to lift 50 pounds and carry 35 pounds.

Work Environment:

Outdoors, working overtime or irregular schedule, working off-shift/rotating schedule, operation of motor vehicles, work in a noisy environment, work near sources of ionizing radiation, work near sources of non-ionizing radiation, headgear or head protection, safety goggles or eye protection, hearing protection.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
