Job Summary

A Phlebotomist contributes to the accurate and timely diagnosis of patients’ medical conditions by collecting blood specimens from patients for testing purposes. Serves as the primary point of contact for patients, providing clerical services that assure the exchange of necessary information between patient and treatment provider and coordinating ancillary services associated with meeting patient health care needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Supports and promotes the mission and values of Covenant Health Ministry.

• Collects blood specimens by venipuncture, meeting expectations for minimal number of draws

required and volume of tests performed for:

• Outpatients

• Inpatients

• Emergency Department patients

• D’Youville Pavilion patients

• Collects blood specimens by specialized methods meeting expectations for a minimal number of

draws required and volume of tests performed:

• Butterflies

• Heel sticks.

• Finger sticks

• Blood cultures

• General phlebotomy skills:

• Assess patient identification properly.

• Labels tubes correctly

• Properly handles specimens (e.g., protect from light if necessary)

• Receives specimens into the laboratory computer system promptly and correctly.

• Promptly delivers specimens to correct areas.

• Is knowledgeable of special handling requirements (IVs, fistulas, etc.) and enters

appropriate comments in the computer system.

• Organizes workflow to ensure all patients are drawn in a timely fashion.

• Responds to emergency buzzers in phlebotomy areas and bathrooms.

• Restocks and cleans phlebotomy areas and carts.

• Explains test procedures to patients.

• Pushes carts with needed supplies, biohazard collection devices, etc.

• Restocks/puts away supplies.

• Orders Laboratory Tests:

• Interprets test orders from physician’s requisition form and accurately inputs that

information into the laboratory computer.

• Does not overlook orders.

• Ascertains appropriate information from the patient (e.g., time of last dosage of

medication, etc.).

• Check into reference lab test requirements, if necessary, before ordering tests.

• Utilizes Electronic Lab Catalog as a specimen collection and ordering reference tool.

• Clerical/Reception Duties:

• Follows through with incident report investigation promptly.

• Greets and directs patients in a courteous, professional manner.

• Answers patient’s questions regarding test protocols

• Explains test procedures to patients.

• Answers telephones courteously and within 3 rings

• Takes verbal orders from physicians and accurately completes yellow phoned-in order

sheet, and orders test in Meditech.

• Delivers printed reports to physician boxes.

• Photocopies.

• Checks orders and scans orders into the EMR.

• Performs Short Registration.

• Pulls lab orders from EPIC.

• General Laboratory Duties:

• Wears appropriate personal protective equipment consistently. Follows safety rules.

• Helps with inventory control, and lets Administrative Assistant know when supplies must

be ordered.

• Dates, rotates, and stores supplies upon receipt.

• Maintains a sanitary work environment.

• Trains new employees

• Assists with periodic updates on procedure manuals.

• Fills inventory requests for nursing units.

• Performs other related duties and activities.

• Takes daily temps.

• Maintains required licenses, certifications, and competencies, and completes annual

compliance courses on time.

• Other duties as consistent with this role.

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or GED required.

• Phlebotomy certification preferred.

An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility

listed above may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

Requires red/green and blue/violent discrimination and accurate depth perception. OSHA standards

Category I, exposure to blood/body fluids or tissue. Must be able to work in a high-paced environment

where multi-tasking, prioritizing, and sound decision-making skills are required. Exposed to disease,

illness, infections, strains, and physical injury. Must possess the physical and mental abilities to perform

the tasks normally associated with this position that involves a combination of sitting, (standing up to 8

  • hours), twisting, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching. Lifting frequently up to 10 pounds from the

    floor to the waist, carrying 10 pounds at least 10 feet, and occasional overhead 10 lbs. Occasionally,

    lifting up to 20 lbs. Some stress is related to a high level of responsibility for quality care. Requires

    red/green and blue/violet discrimination.
