If this sounds like you then we have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist to join our modern laboratory site in Leiden, The Netherlands.

You will be part of a small international team who are responsible for the effective and efficient management of health and safety, emergency management, policy implementation, reporting, investigations, application of controls, risk assessment and delivery of training.

As the EHS Specialist you will be responsible for ensuring the efficient management of health and safety programs and analysing and maintaining occupational health and safety management systems. The EHS Specialist will support and monitor safe working conditions and the effective application of risk controls while working alongside management to maintain a strong safety culture.

What You'll Be Doing

• Guiding site safety committees (chemical safety, biosafety, general safety, occupational health) including emergency management training programs and inductions.

• Responsible for legal compliance by which the company adheres, policies and procedures that regulate business practices, laws, regulations, and jurisdiction.

• Appointed as the prevention officer (Preventiemedewerker) with all associated legal requirements while performing and maintaining the Risk Inventory and Evaluation (RI&E)

• Collaborate with the Works Council, Arbodienst and Human Resources (HR).

• Participate at global EHS&S meetings and transfer company strategies at site level.

• Drafting, reviewing and/or approving and coordinate policy-making activities regarding safe working conditions.

• The site contact person and representative for the EHS to corporate (US-based), and divisional sites (Netherlands, Belgium, UK, USA) EHS community.

• Liaise with CRL colleagues of other business units within The Netherlands.

• Work with the quality and compliance team to ensure the safe consignment of dangerous goods and aspects of shipping safety.

• Consulate with management and persons with responsibility to ensure risks are identified and controls implemented.

• Work with the chemical and biosafety safety officers to ensure compliance to genetically modified organism (GMO) laws and regulations.

• Ensure working practices and environments are safe and comply with legislation.

• Prepare health and safety strategies and develop internal policies.

• Lead in-house training with managers and employees about health and safety issues and risks.

• Provide advice, support, and analysis to help establish risk controls and management processes that promote sustainable business practice.

• Conduct risk assessments, consult with employees, develop risk controls, and provide education and training.

• Carry out equipment and workplace inspections and assisting with safety management system audits.

• Collaborate and consulate with external contractors / sub-contractors / third party operators to ensure work practices are safe and comply with legislation.

• Liaise with tenants and property owner of a shared premise to manage risks arising to guarantee the protection of all personnel and visitors who may be affected.

Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent

  • Preferably a Dutch degree of ‘Hogere Veiligheidskunde’ or equivalent

  • A number of years of EH&S experience

  • Pragmatism and ability to adhere to policy and procedure and regulation

  • A team player with cross-cultural skills (needed to work with our team in Leiden, Beerse (Belgium) and various sites in the UK as well as Corporate (USA))

  • Able to advise, influence and engage site management and colleagues.
