The Medical Assistant will assist physicians and other clinicians by providing a unique blend of skills and knowledge to carry out prescribed medical treatment. The Medical Assistant is a multiskilled health professional responsible for performing administrative and clinical tasks while delivering outstanding customer service and maintaining positive patient engagement.

The Medical Assistant works closely with providers under their direct supervision to: manage the provider's schedule to ensure efficient workflow, perform pre-visit planning based on patient visit type, room patients. Gathers and enters patient information into electronic medical records and identifies and carries our HEDIS and STARS quality measures. Takes vital signs, administers medication, performs diagnostic tests, collects specimens including phlebotomy, and maintains equipment and patient care areas. Works within defined parameters and requires instructions only on new tasks. Makes decisions based on following standard guidelines/policies/practices/protocols that allow for some opportunity within scope for interpretation/deviation and/or independent discretion, including latitude over prioritization and timing of tasks. Seeks new ways to improve own work and development.

Activities performed are moderately complex in nature that may require discretion or interpretation of policies, procedures, practices, and protocols. Requires supervision within standard guidelines and maintains established quality control standards.

As a Medical Assistant , you will be a part of the Clinical Care Team and engage our patients to develop lifelong well-being and health. The Medical Assistant makes a difference in people's lives, administers prescribed medical treatment and personal care services to ill, injured, convalescent, and disabled persons under direction of a Physician.

Medical Assistant Role Overview:

  • Prepares exam room, equipment and supplies needed prior/during patient examination

  • Prepares patient for consultation, taking/documenting vital signs (temp, BP, HR, RR) etc.

  • Draws blood, collects specimens, and administers injections

  • Assists with EKG, wound care, and ear lavage

  • Assists with documentation of HEDIS quality measures

  • Experience documenting in the patient's electronic medical record

  • Performs clinical duties such as discussing symptoms and gathering and inputting information into the electronic medical records system

  • Taking vital signs, giving injections, performing diagnostic tests, collecting specimens, drawing blood, sterilizing and cleaning equipment, and maintaining examination rooms at an outpatient care site

  • Collaborates closely with Physicians and Nurses

  • Delivers direct patient care dependent on what active certification allows

  • Decisions are typically focus on interpretation of area/department policy and methods for completing assignments

  • Works within defined parameters to identify work expectations and quality standards, but has some latitude over prioritization/timing, and works under minimal direction

  • Follows standard policies/practices that allow for some opportunity for interpretation/deviation and/or independent discretion

Additional Information

Required Qualifications

  • Medical Assistant diploma or certificate of completion from a Medical Assisting program

  • Current CPR certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • An active Certified Medical Assistant/CMA or Registered Medical Assistant/RMA certification from one of the following organizations: AAMA, AMT, ARMA, MedCa, NAHP, NAHT, NCCT, NHA or AAH

  • 1 or more years of Medical Assistant experience in 'back-office' direct patient care

  • Bilingual [English & Spanish]

  • Experience with HEDIS and ICD/CPT coding

  • Hands-on professional Phlebotomy experience

  • Experience with Electronic Medical Records

  • Experience in a fast paced/high volume environment

Medical Assistant Working hours:

Monday to Friday 8AM-5PM

Scheduled 40 hours per week

Local travel may be required; Mileage is reimbursed

This role is considered patient facing and is part of Humana's Tuberculosis (TB) screening program. If selected for this role, you will be required to be screened for TB.

Language Proficiency Testing:

Bilingual English/Spanish. Must be able to speak, read and write in both languages without limitations or assistance. See Additional Information on testing. ​Any Humana associate who speaks with a member in a language other than English must take a language proficiency assessment, provided by an outside vendor, to ensure competency. Applicants will be required to take the Interagency Language Rating (ILR) test as provided by the Federal Government.

Pay Range

The compensation range below reflects a good faith estimate of starting base pay for full time (40 hours per week) employment at the time of posting. The pay range may be higher or lower based on geographic location and individual pay will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc.$34,500 - $47,400 per year
