The Section of Orthopedic Surgery at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) is seeking an experienced Advanced Practice Provider – Physician Assistant or Advanced Practice Nurse (new grads with inpatient experience welcome to apply) to join an established and collaborative group on the dynamic, high-volume Orthopedic Surgery team. DHMC is New Hampshire’s only Level I Trauma Center and sees approximately 1,200 patients in its trauma center annually. With a wide geographic base covering southern Vermont, all of New Hampshire, and Eastern Maine, DHMC provides life-saving and life-prolonging care to thousands in New England every year.
The Advanced Practice Provider will be dedicated to inpatient care on the Orthopedic Surgery Service, which provides care to Joint Replacement, Spine, Sports, and Trauma patients. You will work four 10-hour shifts per week, Monday-Saturday, 7:00 am-5:00 pm. You must have strong clinical decision-making skills, be able to think on your feet, and have familiarity with radiological studies and routine laboratory studies. You will work collaboratively with a team of advanced practice providers (APPs), residents, and attending physicians dedicated to the Orthopedic Surgery service. As such, the APP will have a strong interest in the care of injured, critical, and acutely ill Orthopedic surgical patients.
Job Responsibilities:
As part of a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team, performs as needed assessments of Orthopedic patients
Collaboratively creates daily treatment plans and executes these plans on a variety of medical-surgical, telemetry, step-down, and ISCU patients
Coordinates consultation with multiple specialty teams
Independently assesses unstable patients on inpatient units and evaluates for alternative levels of care, stabilizing as needed
Identify and help manage post-operative issues including DVT, PE, anemia, infection, cardiac and respiratory issues, substance withdrawal and delirium
Assesses patient medications including pain management in peri-operative period
Work closely with rehab services teams including occupational and physical therapy to facilitate progress forward in rehabilitation post injury or surgery
Assess post-operative wounds, remove drains, perform complex wound care including wound VAC changes
Perform occasional procedures including sutures, injections, reductions, splinting, and casting if credentialed
Coordinates complex discharges and creates safe and durable post-discharge plans of care including rehabilitation plans and follow-up appointments

National specialty certification as FNP, PNP, Acute or Primary Care A-GNP, WHNP or certification through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
