Coating Technician - Trainee

  • Location: Latrobe, Pennsylvania
  • Schedule: Monday -- Friday, 5:00 AM -- 2:30 PM, 2:30 PM -- 11:00 PM, Employees will work daylight shift for 3 weeks and 1 week afternoon shift. 
  • Ideal Candidates will have experience with sandblasting, lathe operation, and micrometer use.
  • HVOF Coating Experience a PLUS!

What will you be doing?

A Coating Operator/Technician - Trainee is responsible for applying various types of coatings to surfaces of materials to enhance their durability, corrosion resistance, thermal conductivity, or other specific properties. This role involves operating and maintaining coating equipment, preparing surfaces, and ensuring high-quality coating application. As a trainee you will be teamed with one of our experienced Technicians who will work side-by-side with you to ensure that you learn equipment operation and maintenance, proper procedures for surface preparation and coating application, quality control and proper measuring of finished parts. Being a coating technician is a unique opportunity for an attentive, hands-on person who is willing to learn new skills sets in this rapidly developing field. 

 

  1. Coating Application:
  • Set up and operate different spray systems.
  • Load and prepare coating materials, such as metal powders, ceramics, polymers, or composites, into the spray equipment.
  • Ensure proper calibration and adjustment of equipment parameters to achieve desired coating properties.
  • Monitor and control spray parameters, including spray distance, gas flow rates, powder feed rates, and power settings.
  1. Surface Preparation:
  • Clean and prepare substrate surfaces to ensure proper adhesion of the thermal spray coatings.
  • Perform tasks like grit blasting, surface machining, and cleaning to remove contaminants, oxides, and impurities from the substrate.
  1. Quality Control:
  • Inspect coated surfaces for defects, inconsistencies, or irregularities during and after the coating process.
  • Measure coated surfaces with micrometers to ensure proper coating thicknesses.
  • Perform tests such as hardness, thickness, porosity, and adhesion tests to ensure coatings meet required specifications.
  • Document and report any deviations from quality standards and implement corrective actions.
  1. Maintenance and Troubleshooting:
  • Conduct routine maintenance on spray equipment, including cleaning, replacement of worn parts, and calibration.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions or operational issues to minimize downtime and maintain productivity.

     5. Safety and Compliance:

  • Adhere to strict safety protocols and guidelines while operating thermal spray equipment and handling coating materials.

  • Always use proper PPE when operating equipment to ensure personal safety and compliance with company safety requirements.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment to prevent accidents and ensure compliance with workplace regulations.
  1. Documentation and Reporting:
  • Keep detailed records of coating parameters, process settings, maintenance activities, and quality control results.
  • Generate reports summarizing coating performance, qu lity, and any issues encountered during the coating process.

     Skills and Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical education or certification such as basic welding or machining is preferred.

  • Proven experience as a coating operator or technician is a significant advantage.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings, specifications, and work instructions with the ability to read micrometers.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent problem-solving skills to diagnose and address coating defects and equipment issues.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating effective communication skills.
  • Solid commitment to safety practices and the ability to work in a physically demanding environment which can be hot and dusty at times.
  • Willingness to learn and be trained in all aspects of the coating technician position.
