Berry Global QUALITY ASSURANCE MANAGER in LATHROP, California

Overview

This position is responsible for driving the plant’s continuous improvement program, which includes improving customer satisfaction, product quality and reliability, Lean Manufacturing, Kaizen, Six Sigma and Zero Defect programs, and drives out waste and improves productivity coupled with the education of overall product variation and waste. This role will set the facility direction for Continuous Improvement. Will lead in fostering the professional development of facility Leads, Technicians, Supervisors, and Managers. Is a proactive change agent who drives a continuous improvement culture. This implementation must lead to continual improvements in safety, quality, productivity and Key Operating Metrics (KOM’s).

Responsibilities

 

  • Accountable for the safety of all employees for whom they are responsible through active engagement in safety activities and provides clear, consistent communication of safe work expectations.

  • Supports and investigates situations in which line/equipment stoppage occurs due to perceived, imminent safety risk.

  • Completes responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and procedures, and applicable laws

  • Actively leads risk assessment activities for their area of responsibility by driving prioritized corrective and preventive actions to eliminate/reduce environmental, health or safety risks.

  • Lead all required meetings with safety (i.e. Pre-shift, Department, Change Management, General communication, Town Hall, etc.)

  • Completes incident investigations, root cause analysis and implements corrective actions accordingly in a timely and thorough manner.

  • Ensures the proper training and development of all assigned employees for whom they are responsible.

  • Sets goals for their organizational unit; achieves goals and ensures that all employees understand and work toward achieving goals.

  • Motivates and coaches employees through good communication and frequent performance feedback. Identifies and coordinates additional training as needed.

  • Carries out managerial responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training staff; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; coaching, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints, resolving issues,communicating position expectations; and enforcing policies and procedures.

  • Provides leadership in maintaining quality and efficiency throughout the department.

  • Maintains receiving, warehousing, and distribution operations by initiating, coordinating, and enforcing program, operational, and personnel policies and procedures.

  • Improve quality, productivity, and delivery in own department and indirectly contribute to other departments

  • Directly supervises Quality Supervisor, and indirectly supervise but is responsible for leadership of Quality department staff.

  • Plan, lead and execute action plans that will result in improving quality, productivity and delivery as well as meeting or exceeding established goals.

  • Develop and implement systems for control of processes and products.

  • Assure process and product conformance to customer requirements.

  • Develop standard operating procedures, work instructions, and forms that are consistent with other company locations, Plant Managers’ operating philosophies, customer quality programs and industry standards and using QSI system as applicable.

  • Develop and implement systems that assure continuous improvement of processes and product within area of ownership and department.

  • Responsible for the Quality Management System.

  • Facilitate and train Berry personnel in problem solving techniques and quality requirements.

  • Facilitate/orchestrate quality inspections, metrology and sample submission presentations to assure proper approvals are granted the first time product is reviewed by customer, Purchasing, Quality or Engineering representatives.

  • Serve as customer liaison for quality, engineering and production related issues. Responsible for collecting, disseminating and controlling information between internal sources and customer locations.

  • Serve as custodian of the manufacturing facility’s quality and training plans.

  • Assist in the evaluation and development of the source /subcontractor base for department.

  • Provide leadership in maintaining and improving quality and efficiency throughout production.Work with all employees to improve processes & eliminate waste across all shifts

  • Achieves Quality Assurance operational and ISO objectives by contributing information and analysis to strategic plans and reviews; preparing and completing action plans; implementing production, productivity, and quality standards; identifying and resolving problems; completing audits; determining system improvements; implementing change.

  • Assists in developing production plans by identifying critical control points and preventive measures; establishing critical limits, monitoring procedures, corrective actions, and verification procedures.

  • Maintains and improves product quality by compliance, and audits; investigating customer complaints; collaborating with other members to develop manufacturing and training methods.

  • Report to management on the performance of the floor’s quality management system and any need for improvement.

  • Ensure the promotion of awareness of customer requirements throughout the organization.

  • Plans, coordinates and assists with manufacturing and manufacturing supervisors in the development of new processes, equipment needs, efficiencies, safety, staff development and training.

  • Work with Holdware in reducing quantity, disposition, analyzing, training, providing status and reports.

  • Understands, supports, and participates in ISO 9001, SQF, and Food Safety Standards (GMP, AIB, ASI, etc)

  • Assist in maintaining & qualifying new lab equipment and as well as calibration status of all equipment.

  • Maintenance of Flexport Data Collection System and training.

  • Participate in the New Product kick-off meetings to identify and review all specification requirements.

  • Participate in tool qualification protocol and procedure as a QA representative.

  • Responsible for capability studies sample collection.

  • Responsible for the collection and measurement samples using the Flexport Data Collector System and/or VBG machine.

  • Prepare reports, executive summaries and data of QA information.

  • Responsible for communication, monitoring and participation regarding quality, quality issues, machine and tool qualifications to respective departments such as production, engineering, sales, and management.

  • Conduct studies to (lab evaluations) clear ECN's and EWR's.

  • Maintain and support statistical software such as Anstat, Minitab and Shopfloor.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATION

To perform this job successfully, the applicable candidate must be a team player and able to make decisions under pressure with a cross functional team of individuals and be flexible to work with all shifts. The additional requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Four year bachelor degree, preferably a business or engineering-related field of study; or acquired A.S.Q. Certification in the management or engineering curriculum; or willing to invest the time and cost to achieve the certification or degree.

  • Five years in a quality or related manufacturing discipline (preferably plastic industry).

  • Understand and have the ability to train the continuous improvement concepts (i.e.Total Quality Management) and methods, basic and advanced statistical process control technique (S.P.C.).

  • Ability to take a leadership role in the problem solving and defect analysis groups.

  • Ability to write procedures, instructions, reports and letters for both internal and external correspondence.

  • Excellent communication, planning, coordination, directing and follow-up skills.

  • Ability to mentor, motivate, train and discipline salaried and salaried non-exempt hourly employees who are assigned to the Quality Assurance Department.

  • Must be proficient in the use of computers.

  • Preferably bilingual (English-Spanish).

  • Able to travel to customer and supplier locations for various periods of time and participate in or take a leadership role in meetings, investigations, problem solving discussions, salvage reviews and project teams.

  • Meet the essential demands that are required for being responsible for an efficient 24-hour day operation.
