Job Title: Medical Technologist Point of Care Department

This position is located in Lancaster PA.

1.0 FTE, Full time, Monday-Friday. Hours between 8am and 4:30 pm variable. No holidays. Weekends as needed. Oversee, train and competency assess POCT sites outside the main laboratory

POSITION SUMMARY: Performs routine and special diagnostic test procedures, as well as supporting Quality Control and documentation, function verification, instrument maintenance, associated specimen collection, and clerical work as required. Patient care includes care to patients in the following age groups: neonatal (birth to 30 days), pediatric (30 days through 12 years), adolescent (13 through 18 years), adult (19 through 64 years), and geriatric (65 years and above).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:

  • Monitors manual functions of test system and instruments to assure accuracy and precision; performs and runs standards, patient samples, programmed controls through automated or manual protocols. Distributes and observes proficiency testing throughout the enterprise.

  • Records and evaluates programmed quality control results according to established control limits; follows corrective action procedures for out-of-control situations.

  • Reviews patient and quality control results for accuracy. Follows up with corrective action for technical or clerical errors.

  • Performs routine scheduled maintenance, cleaning and decontamination of instruments, equipment, and work areas not cleaned by Environmental Services personnel.

  • Exhibits appropriate professionalism and work ethic in accordance with Core Values.

  • Manage projects to completion with oversight from Lead Medical Technologist, including assisting in method selection, validation and implementation.

  • Helps develop and implement education, training and competency programs.

  • Writes technical procedures according to manufacturer guidelines, regulatory compliance and analytical standards.

  • Maintains good communication and customer service with Laboratory, management and other hospital areas.

  • Functions as a Medical Technologist, as required.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS: The following duties are considered secondary to the primary duties listed above:

  • Answers telephone, takes requests, telephone reports to nursing stations and/or doctors' offices when requested or when results of test s warrant immediate notification. Searches for reports either in computer, on worksheets or in files.

  • Reports outdating reagent supplies, replenishes and rotates lab stock of consumable materials. Orders additional stock when needed. Prepares reagent solutions as directed. Logs incoming supplies.

  • Supplements phlebotomy functions when necessary.

  • Observes, reports unusual situations, reactions, and conditions to responsible person. Evaluates and implements corrective actions as indicated, within scope of experience.

  • Participates in structured and informal in-service and continuing education activities inside and outside the department to maintain current knowledge in related medical areas and interpersonal relationship.

  • Accepts assignment to varied hours and days in order to support the department and its functions.

  • Assists in regulatory preparation and inspection processes as needed.

  • Participates in the on-call responsibilities for this position as required.

  • Other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of a medical lab science program or Bachelor of Science required.

  • MT or MLT issued by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or equivalent agency must be obtained within 6 months of hire.

  • Valid PA driver’s license.

  • One (1) year of clinical internship or Laboratory experience.

  • Previous experience with Microsoft Office Products including Excel, Access and Word. EQUIPMENT USAGE REQUIREMENTS Equipment/Tools: telephone, copier, FAX machine, computer, typewriter, printer, pagers, centrifuge, microscope, lab specimen instrumentation, refrigerator, thermometers, analytical balance, pipettes, needles, syringes, test tubes, slides, office supplies, stop watch, vacutainers and maintenance tools. Software: Microsoft Office and department specific software and hardware and clinical information system.
