Woodstream Mechanical Product Design Engineer Intern in Lancaster, Pennsylvania

Woodstream has a rich history of over 150 years, and we are an essential, life sustaining business.  We provide pest & animal control products that destroy disease carrying insects & rodents.

We have an upcoming Summer Internship for Mechanical Product Design Engineer Intern

This is a paid internship.

Overview of the Role:

This position will enable an intern to gain valuable experience in mechanical engineering as it relates to new product development. The intern will work alongside the Mechanical Product Design Engineers to support the design of new products through research, hands-on testing, CAD modeling, building test fixtures, and prototyping designs. Additionally, the intern will assist in reviewing design documentation for existing products to ensure CAD models and drawings accurately represent our produced products. In order to continue to support our company’s ESG goals, the internship will have a focus on identifying ways to improve efficiency and sustainability of processes within the engineering lab.

Project Description & Responsibilities:

  • Design a filtration system to filter and reuse the isopropyl alcohol (IPA) used with our Formlabs 3D printer wash station.

  • Over time, the IPA in our wash station becomes saturated with uncured liquid resin and must be replaced to maintain its effectiveness. A filtration system would help reduce the amount of IPA we need and waste IPA we produce that must be stored and disposed of properly. This project would also be highly instrumental in supporting our company’s ESG efforts and goals.

  • Design a drainage pumping system for our large ultrasonic parts wash tank.

  • Our fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printers utilize a soluble support material that must be removed in a wash tank containing a sodium hydroxide solution. We currently have a large ultrasonic wash tank installed, but need a drainage pump system designed so we can drain saturated solution in the tank into drums for storage and disposal.

  • Sustaining engineering work to ensure accurate design documentation within Product Data Management (PDM) system.

  • Various products across our brands require review of the design documentation available within our PDM system to ensure the information is accurate and up to date. This project would involve ensuring that the documentation for products within our Havahart and Dynatrap product lines are current and organized correctly and effectively. Updating and creating 3D models and 2D drawings will likely be required to support this task.

Successful Candidate Profile:

  • Enrolled in college and working towards a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering / Mechanical Engineering Technology

  • Prior experience using SolidWorks or other similar 3D CAD software is preferred

  • Prompt and regular attendance required to support job functions

  • Hands-on skills including but not limited to machining, prototype creation utilized 3D printers, and general shop equipment experience are highly desirable

  • Creative approach to problem-solving, highly motivated, and willing to learn
