Staff Veterinarian - Kohler Stables

Work Mode: Onsite

Opportunity

Manage the routine medical, emergency and reproduction care of all on farm horses.

Specific Responsibilities

Under direction of the Manager & Trainer – Kohler Stables, direct and maintain all medical, emergency, and reproductive care for all horses as follows:

  • Prepare all mares not in foal to breeding conditions for early conception for the next season.

  • Maintain all pregnant mares with wormings, shots, and close observation on coming foaling.

  • Maintain all horses with wormings, shots, and close routine care.

  • Routine medical and emergency care of all horses on property

  • Schedule adequate foaling facilities for due mares and assist in their foaling.

  • Schedule and prepare mares for re/breeding

  • For mares selected to breed to stallions not housed at Kohler Stables: Schedule and prepare for adequate travel arrangements and/or schedule and prepare shipping arrangements for semen from those stallions.

  • Prepare breeding records and inventory to be submitted to Kohler Stables office for housed and visiting mares.

  • Prepare stallion report records and contracts to be submitted to Kohler Stables office for housed and visiting stallions i.e. frozen semen, embryos, etc.

  • Responsible for broodmares at all times for all their needs, including seasonal PM/overnight shifts, attend all foalings.

  • Foaling and foal health needs

  • Meeting all veterinary needs of horses on site for reproduction and training

  • Support Performance veterinarian with Lameness and performance maintenance of show and training horses

  • The reproduction component consists of but not limited to, ultra sounding and palpating mares, developing mare management plans, managing recipient mare herd and performing diagnostics and treatments. Attend foaling out mares, neonatal care that can be done in field and developing treatment plans for sick foals.

  • Routine reproductive management of mares and stallionsprocessing, sperm centrifugation methods, testicular evaluation.

  • Serve as a mentor role for all team members.

  • Be willing to work as a team or individually.

  • Follow all Kohler stables policies and procedures.

  • Veterinary care for all horses on farm and any other farm owned animals.

  • Other stables-oriented assignments as needed.

Skills/Requirements

  • DVM or equivalent, eligible for licensure in the state of WI.

  • Some education in Animal Science, Equine Studies, or related field, preferred.

  • A valid drivers’ license and ability to pass a driving background check is required.

  • Must be able to expertly drive and park a vehicle with a large horse trailer.

  • Must be at least 21 to drive company vehicles and to pull a trailer.

  • Must have open availability and ability to be on-call as needed.

  • Physical requirements of the position include sitting, standing, walking, running, climbing, bending, reaching, stooping, squatting, and lifting up to 50 pounds frequently.

The salary range for this position is $106,900 - $133,600. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s experience, their education, and the work location. Available benefits include medical, dental, vision & 401k.
