Medical Oncology Internship:

BluePearl Kirkland, WA (formerly Seattle Veterinary Specialists) is offering a one-year specialty oncology internship for 2024-25 outside of the VIRMP match.

This will be the 6th year of our medical oncology internship program with a successful placement record of the past 4 interns into residency programs, led by Dr. Kevin Choy (former member and Chair of the ACVIM Oncology Credentials Committee 2020-2023).

About the Hospital:

BP Kirkland, WA is a 24-hour Emergency/Critical Care and Specialty Practice part of the BP Specialty Hospital Network in the Pacific Northwest with additional hospitals in Downtown Seattle, Renton, Tacoma and Olympia. Specialties on-site include Neurology, Soft Tissue and Orthopedic Surgery, Rehabilitation, Internal Medicine, Radiology, Medical Oncology, Clinical Pathology, Emergency Medicine, and Critical Care.

BP Kirkland, WA hospital practice is located in the Eastside just 30 minutes from downtown Seattle in a thriving cosmopolitan yet casual inclusive multicultural city with easy access to the arts, music, foodie scene and the beautiful Pacific Northwest nature, including snow sports, hiking, biking, kayaking, white-water rafting and more are readily available within the region’s two nearby mountain ranges and glacier-carved lakes, waterways and islands. Didactic Training & Externships:

Interns will participate in hospital grand rounds, which includes a rotating weekly schedule of journal club, M&M, and topic lectures performed by all house officers and specialists. Specialists, ER doctors, house officers, and technicians also present continuing education lectures for in-house staff as well as referring doctors and technicians through events at the hospital and annual regional conferences. Oncology interns will also have oncology-specific journal club weekly and monthly textbook rounds. Interns are also encouraged and supported to prepare a manuscript for publication during their internship such as case report or retrospective study.

Interns also have the opportunity to rotate through additional services including radiology, internal medicine, clinical pathology, and other relevant specialty services such as cardiology, neurology, surgical oncology and clinical benchtop research in translational oncology depending on intern preference. Interns are provided one week of professional development time and two weeks of vacation time. Off-site rotations may be permitted on a case-by-case basis.

Oncology Service Schedule & Responsibilities:

The Medical Oncology service is Monday-Thursday with Oncology Intern working under the direct supervision of a board-certified oncologist with additional support from 3 oncologists in the nearby BP Oncologists in the greater Seattle area.

Caseload is typically 8-12 patients a day with a mix of 1-2 new patients, 1-2 procedures, 0-1 hospitalized inpatients and rechecks daily. Typical weekdays start with ER grand rounds at 7am and end once all appointments and in-patients have been completed (typically 6-7pm). Oncology interns will share weeknight and weekend on-call duties for the oncology service with the supervising specialist.

Work in the Oncology service includes primary care case management for appointments, in-patients (urgent care/emergency transfer) including diagnostic evaluation, staging and treatment of cancer patients with modalities such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, cryotherapy and electrochemotherapy. The Oncology intern also is expected to work one ER shift per week in the Emergency service, with primary case responsibility (typically 7am-7pm / 10a to 10pm on either Friday or Sunday, with a 2-day weekend each week).
