Function Description:

Manager – Credit Decision Science Lead for CAS Modernization

Credit and Fraud Risk Organization (CFR) within American Express has the mission of minimizing credit and fraud losses while promoting business growth and delivering superior customer service. In India, the CFR CoE (Center of Excellence) is a team of 700 colleagues involved in developing predictive models, business strategies, capabilities and platforms for driving the above outcomes across all portfolios for American Express globally. At American Express we are focused on providing the best customer experience everyday through a differentiated set of products and services. Our risk management capabilities are the core of delivering the superior customer experience while managing credit and fraud losses at lowest levels in the industry. In order to deliver on the vision, the team is driving the roadmap for modernizing risk platforms while enabling new business capabilities. Modernizing the Authorizations platform, is a key strategic imperative to uplift an aging infrastructure and provide new capabilities to enable rapid innovation and growth. We are looking for a Credit Decision Science lead this modernization effort. Some one who will drive the vision and strategy for modernization of this platform from credit decision science prospective. The role involves creating product vision based on current and future need of Credit Risk Decision Science teams.

Purpose of the Role:

The successful candidate will lead 2-3 credit risk professionals and will be responsible to understand the current and future need of the credit decision science team in terms of the data, variables, modeling process and capability and work with the product teams to design the system. A good understanding of the Credit models and data science will be critical for the success in this role. This role will require working closely with Decision science team and the product teams. The incumbent would be part of the Commercial Decision Science team reporting into Director, Credit Decision Science Lead for System modernization and work closely with Consumer and commercial Customer Risk Modeling teams.


  • Provide business process modernization requirements based on current state and future needs. Ensure current needs are being met while future is being defined.

  • Identify and Incorporate needs from both consumer and commercial portfolio by partnering with Data Science and Decision Science team

  • Provide thought leadership, and partner with cross-functional teams including Risk, Compliance and Technologies

  • Understand best practices across portfolio and variable construct and work toward process and data standardizations/enhancement globally

  • Identify and prioritize the list of platform optimization opportunities & recommendations

  • Communicate and build consensus across multiple stakeholders in creating the best in class solution

  • At least 4-5 years of industry experience in Decision science is preferred.

  • A good balance of technical knowledge and business acumen with a proven track record of driving innovation and business metrics with a customer-first mindset

  • Loves dealing with fast pace, changing needs, and limited resources.

  • Good communication and persuasion skills with an ability to translate technical analysis into business insights and recommendations, work with diverse teams and individuals, and influence others without direct authority

  • The ability to set a high bar for your team and empower them to achieve great results

  • A “driver” personality - constantly pushing toward clarity and delivery while balancing the need for great collaboration.

  • Ability to understand data, synthesize into real world meaning, break down business problems, and conduct brainstorming.

  • Relevant statistical analysis/econometric experience required and able to effectively translate analytical findings to business implications.

  • Post-Graduation from a top tier college (either MBA/M tech/MS/Masters in quantitative subjects such as Economics, Statistics or Mathematics
