National Association of Insurance Commissioners Sr. Advisor, Catastrophe Risk & Modeling in Kansas City, Missouri
Job Description:
The Center for Insurance Policy and Research (CIPR) division of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Advisor, Catastrophe Risk & Modeling. This position oversees and manages research projects, providing expert guidance and support to leadership in identifying and analyzing insurance developments for the Catastrophe (CAT) Modeling Center of Excellence (COE). This full-time hybrid or remote position is based in Kansas City, MO in a positive and flexible environment.
Responsibilities Include:
Leverages catastrophe modeling and catastrophic risk subject matter expertise to the three core pillars of CAT COE activity namely: Vendor Models, Education and Tools, and Applied Research.
Sets and implements strategic goals and objectives of these three CAT COE pillars of activity and measures and monitors their success.
Engages with the state insurance departments to determine catastrophe modeling needs
Acts as relationship manager to CAT model vendors in obtaining modeling technical documentation as well as contracting with vendors to provide the data and/or modeling needed regarding catastrophes and risk management.
Works to identify and develop technical education and training strategy and materials on the mechanics of commercial models and the treatment of perils and risk exposures that is tailored to the needs of regulators.
Works to scope out and implement identified research projects using various model platforms.
Create formal networks with key decision makers and are widely recognized as an expert and thought leader by both internal and external community.
Management Responsibilities
This position is responsible for the performance of a team of direct reports including Property and Casualty Actuary and Catastrophe Risk Data Analyst.
Minimum Education and/or Experience Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in STEM fields such as physical geography, applied math, actuarial science, statistics, engineering, physics or atmospheric science is preferred, with at least 10+ years’ experience in a senior capacity in one of the following areas is required: catastrophe modeling, physical climate modeling, catastrophe risk analysis or catastrophe exposure and portfolio management experience.
Systems & Technology Requirements
Microsoft Office Suite/365, including proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat reader.
Proficient in the use of catastrophe vendor modeling software for at least one natural peril.
Preferred Experience:
Certified Specialist in Catastrophe Risk from the International Society of Catastrophe Managers (ICSM) or equivalent Moody’s RMS and/or Verisk certification.
Proficiency in R/Python/SQL and geospatial systems/software.
Travel:
This position requires regular, out-of-state, overnight travel in support of NAIC member and state department of insurance meetings and events throughout the year. An ideal candidate must be able and willing to travel to locations throughout the United States and with such frequency as necessary to meet the needs of this position and the Association. International travel is also possible.

Compensation:
$167,634 - $242,123, commensurate with education and experience.
