About this Role

JOB TITLE: Head of Estimating

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Head of Estimating is responsible for overseeing the estimating process for all projects within the company. This role involves managing a team of estimators, developing accurate and competitive project estimates, and collaborating closely with project managers, engineers, and clients to ensure successful project outcomes. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in cost estimation, excellent leadership skills, and a keen eye for detail.

What You'll Do

Estimating and Analysis:

  • Oversee the preparation of detailed and accurate cost estimates for projects, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs.

  • Analyze project specifications, drawings, and other documentation to prepare comprehensive bid proposals.

  • Ensure all estimates are completed on time and in accordance with company standards and client requirements.

  • Evaluating and determining MBE/WBE requirements for each bid; ensuring good faith effort is made when appropriate.

  • Reviewing Division One of contract specifications for special requirements prior to bid.

  • Verifying the pricing for general conditions, contingencies, and allowances.

  • Closing bids on bid day.

  • Reviewing bid form for completeness and accuracy.

  • Providing, coordinating, and organizing estimate material for ‘estimate transfer’ meeting.

  • Conducting ‘estimate transfer’ (turnover) meeting.

    Leadership and Management:

  • Lead and mentor the estimating team, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment.

  • Develop and implement best practices, processes, and standards for the estimating department.

  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide professional development opportunities for team members.

    Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work closely with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to gather information and ensure alignment on project requirements and objectives.

  • Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and client presentations as necessary.

  • Maintain strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure competitive pricing and quality.

    Strategic Planning and Development:

  • Assist in the development of long-term strategies for the estimating department, including resource planning, budgeting, and technology enhancements.

  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement innovative solutions to increase efficiency and accuracy.

  • Stay current with industry trends, regulations, and best practices to maintain a competitive edge.

What You'll Bring

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field.

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in cost estimation within the construction or utilities sector, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.

  • Proven track record of managing and leading a successful estimating team.

  • Strong understanding of estimating software and tools, such as [specific software names].

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy in preparing estimates.

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
