Job Title: Geotechnical Technician
Job Description
The Geotechnical Technician will be responsible for visiting project sites across Missouri, Illinois, and parts of Kansas to conduct geotechnical sampling under the supervision of the lead driller. The candidate will return results to the lab and run tests to ensure accuracy and accountability within the project team.
Responsibilities
Field observation at construction sites, including inspection and testing of soils, concrete, and asphalt pavements.
Conduct pier inspections.
Logging of test borings.
Perform laboratory testing.
Report writing.
Inspect contractor's operations in the placement of concrete for pavements and for bridge piers and abutments.
Conduct air content tests and slump tests, and obtain cylinders for subsequent load tests.
Inspect contractor's method of handling and placing concrete to minimize segregation, finishing of the concrete, and curing methods.
Inspect paving trains to ensure a smooth concrete pavement.
Inspect contractor's operations in the installation of culverts, sewers, and ditches.
Ensure safe excavation of trenches for proper alignment and grade, correct material placement, proper shaping to "bed" the pipe, and proper compaction of backfill over pipes.
Essential Skills
Experience as an Engineering Technician, Field Engineer, or Quality Control Inspector.
Proficiency in soil sampling and testing.
Knowledge of geotechnical drilling, investigation, and analysis.
Understanding of construction and engineering principles.
Work Environment
Candidates will spend time both in the office and at project sites for sample collection. The role requires interaction with clients on-site. The work culture is aggressive and demanding but rewarding, with a 'work hard, play hard' ethos. Fieldwork is typically conducted in teams of 2-3. Daily attire includes a t-shirt or polo with a vest, jeans, and work boots. Candidates must be prepared for outdoor conditions, including rain and cold weather. Work is conducted Monday through Friday, with weekends at home unless project demands or weather require otherwise. Per diem and mileage rates apply for travel.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.
