UH Lakewood Medical Center is located between Kansas City and Lee’s Summit, Missouri, offering residents of Eastern Jackson County access to a modern community hospital with a continuum of outpatient services designed to meet the needs of families. UH Lakewood specializes in high-risk maternal and child care, and serves as one of the few Kansas City metro area institutions accredited by The Joint Commission in Orthopedics and Palliative Care. It also is home to a 188-bed, fully accredited long-term care center.

UH Behavioral Health is the KC metro area’s largest, most comprehensive provider of mental health services. The Crossroads Building , located in Kansas City’s vibrant Crossroads Arts District, is its epicenter, providing a broad list of outpatient services. We also offer psychiatric inpatient care, and we deliver therapeutic services through our community outreach clinics. We are a leader in the Trauma-Informed Care Movement, and provide training, coaching and consulting to outside organizations.

Job Description

Working under the general direction of the Community Health Education Manager, the Community Health Educator works directly with members of the community to promote wellness and educate the population on healthy life decisions for better health outcomes through community health education programs. As a trusted member of the community, the Community Health Educator will have a strong understanding of the community that they serve and the needs of the families and groups that exist within the community. The Community Health Educator will have the ability to modify programs, courses and curriculum to fit the needs of each community group. This position will also assist with the development of community-based health initiatives to improve health outcomes and reduce barriers to care by collaborating with local schools, community centers, faith-based organization, libraries and other non-profit and community institutions. Monitors and evaluates program impact through data collection for reporting and program improvement.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, health promotion/education, or other closely related field

  • Ability to develop and support community coalitions and other techniques to affect public health problems at the community systems level

  • Experience working with diverse community populations

  • Experience in project management

  • Possess and maintain valid driver’s license and appropriate automobile insurance

  • Knowledgeofthecorefunctionsand essential servicesofpublichealth

  • Knowledge of health promotion and education theories and practices related to public health, epidemiology, disease prevention, behavioral change, group process, community organizing and mobilizing, social justice, ad adult/child learning

  • Excellentoralandwrittencommunicationskills with the ability to utilize multiple communication tools based on the presentation venue

  • Professionalpresencewith a customer serviceorientation

  • Team orientedindividual with the ability to managechallengeswith tact andconfidentiality

  • Strongorganizationalskills and the ability to workin a fast-paced environment

  • Excellentpersonal computer skillsincluding MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlookproceduresrequired

  • Physical ability to lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds

  • If driving is a requirement for the employee, he/she must meet the requirements specified in the Fleet Driving Safety and Compliance Policy and must continue to meet these requirements as a condition of employment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in allied health medical field or related field or licensed RNorLPN

  • Bi-Lingual – Spanish/English

  • CertifiedHealthEducationSpecialist

  • Certified Nutritionist

  • Certified in weight loss/physical fitness

  • Knowledgeofprinciples,techniquesandapplication of behavioralepidemiologyasrelated to healtheducation and promotion

  • Ability to research,compileandsummarize a variety ofinformationalandstatisticaldataandmaterials

  • Skilled in methods and techniquesofresearch,statisticalanalysis and reportpresentation
