The anticipated salary range for this role is between $202,000.00 and $236,000.00. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.

Role Description

SMBC Capital Markets, Inc, a swap dealer registered with CFTC, is seeking a highly skilled controller to join and oversee the Accounting team. The position will be responsible for all aspects of accounting functions of the swap dealer such as monthly close, financial reporting, regulatory reporting, etc., and will report to MD in Accounting/Finance. In discharging the duties as the controller, this position will regularly interact with various levels of management within the organization.

Role Objectives

  • Oversee month-end close, quarterly financial review and annual audit of the swap dealer

  • Oversee the design and implementation of robust controls to ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulatory rules

  • Oversee daily capital ratio calculation process as well as the preparation and filing of the monthly NFA report

  • Coordinate with Regulatory Policy and Accounting Policy teams to evaluate the impact of the new products/initiatives/regulatory guidance from regulatory and accounting perspective, and advise relevant stakeholders such as front-office, senior management, and implement necessary processes and controls

  • Interface with regulators and provide responses to regulatory inquiries and exams

  • Provide insights into balance sheet and capital management initiatives to optimize the use of the firm’s resources

  • Oversee development of processes and controls to ensure completeness and accuracy of the data attributes provided to Bank Holding Company’s (“BHC”) Controllers for FRB-related regulatory reports

  • Establish strong working relationship with all stakeholders in and outside of the organization including senior management, BHC Controllers, external auditors, regulators, etc

  • Provide leadership and direction for the team, identify knowledge gap and provide adequate training, recognize their skill-sets and employ resources appropriately to maximize their contribution

  • Lead strategic and tactical finance projects on entity-level and global-level

Qualifications and Skills

  • 15+ years of Accounting/Finance experience in financial industry

  • 5+ year of a leadership/management position in swap dealer Accounting/Finance or equivalent role

  • Expert derivative knowledge, accounting knowledge

  • Familiarity with Basel III capital rules

  • Excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, and ability to lead and manage a team

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and ability to translate business needs into operational accounting priorities

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting/Finance

  • CPA required, CFA a strong plus

  • Experience with NFA FR-CSE-BHC regulatory report a strong plus

  • Understanding of FRB regulatory reports a plus

  • Oracle GL experience a plus
