Job Summary:
To perform diagnostic and theraptic nuclear procedures for the detection and treatment of disease, while ensuring patient safety and comfort. To prepare and administer radiopharmaceuticals to patients and monitor the characteristics and functions of tissues or organs.
Education & Experience
Graduate of a formal educational program in Nuclear Medicine Technology accredited by a mechanism acceptable to the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) or met the requirements for certification by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB).
Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required: ARRT registration in Nuclear Medicine Technology and/or Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) by hire date; Mississippi registration by hire date. BLS required within 90 days of hire date.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of radiopharmacy, nuclear medicine instrumentation, and radiation safety. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications. Verbal and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills. Ability to operate scintillation detection and other ancillary equipment. Ability to alleviate patient anxiety. Ability to ensure compliance with workplace safety, environmental, exposure control, and /or infection control practices.
Responsibilities
Prepares and administers radiopharmaceuticals to patients; performs a full range of nuclear medicine imaging procedures utilizing specialized equipment and techniques.
Explains procedures to patient, reviews patient medical history and physician's orders to determine dosage amounts and methods of delivery; positions the patient in a manner to facilitate optimum imaging results.
Calibrates and operates gamma scintillation cameras and computers, counters and scanners, dose calibrators, and other ancillary equipment; verifies scan quality; maintains patient records and documents the amount and type of radionuclides receiv d, used, and discarded.
Maintains nuclear medicine equipment and supplies; reports equipment malfunctions to supervisor.
Monitors patients during treatment and recognizes emergency patient conditions; provides physical and psychological comfort to patient.
Ensures compliance with workplace safety, environmental, exposure control, and/or infection control practices.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Physical and Environmental Demands
Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, constant handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, constant exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, frequent work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, constant bending, frequent lifting and carrying more than 100 pounds, frequent crouching/stooping, occasional driving, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, occasional sitting, constant standing, occasional twisting, and frequent walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
