The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is the world's leading resource for conservation, research, education, and citizen science focused on birds. The Lab is a vibrant unit within Cornell's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), where full-time faculty and many other renowned professionals direct world-class, mission-driven programs.


What You Will Do

The Lab of Ornithology is seeking a Temporary Custodial Worker to perform comprehensive custodial maintenance and event support duties. The Ornithology complex includes the Johnson Center, a state-of-the-art research, museum and public facility consisting of 92,000 GSF, and the Ornithology Maintenance Building that houses a shop, equipment storage, and a research service area and shop totaling 6,400 GSF. The incumbent will be one of three team members responsible for cleaning assigned areas following established procedures and in accordance with departmental needs and standards.


These duties may include, but are not limited to: mopping, stripping and waxing floors; vacuuming and shampooing carpets; spot cleaning walls and baseboards; dusting, including light fixtures and HVAC vents & diffusers; washing windows and glass display cases; cleaning & disinfecting toilets, urinals and sinks; filling towel and soap dispensers; cleaning whiteboards; cleaning & disinfecting water fountains; emptying general trash, non-hazardous-non-infectious lab trash and recyclables ensuring that all guidelines and protocols are followed.


Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to :

  • setting up facility-owned or rented tables, chairs, podium, and portable PA systems as required for events.
  • Assist with snow and ice removal when necessary, shoveling and a small walk behind snowblower.
  • Clean staff kitchen appliances, refrigerators, and microwaves.
  • Call supervisor or Maintenance Mechanic for any building emergencies that arise.
  • Responsible for maintaining open and respectful communications with custodial team, supervisor, Lab staff, students and visitors.
  • Participate in team meetings, relevant training and meet regularly with supervisor to review activities and provide feedback.

The schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, 11:00am - 7:30pm. Some weekend work and weekly schedules may fluctuate depending on special events that will be required based on event schedules. All custodians participate in working special events on a rotational basis.


This is a full-time 39 hour position, fully benefits eligible, 6-month temporary position beginning in February 2024. Temporary position to start but it may turn into a regular position.


What We Need from You

  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent. Ability to read, understand and communicate in English.
  • Prior custodial and event set up experience of at least one to two years.
  • Must have a record of excellent attendance and dependability.
  • Proven ability to learn new tasks quickly and work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience with and knowledge of commercial cleaning equipment and methods including floor scrubbers, polishers, and vacuums.
  • Experience maintaining various floor finishes.
  • Ability to resolve questions and accomplish most tasks under general supervision.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate related power equipment.
  • Ability to lift 75 pounds and to climb/work comfortably and safely on an 8'stepladder.
  • Proven ability to work effectively and cooperatively with others and build good working relationships to solve problems and achieve common goals.
  • Always strive to be diplomatic and courteous.
  • Must be able to work a regular afternoon shift, 11:00pm to 6:30PM; occasional shift changes may be necessary to cover events, etc., weekends and evenings, when necessary, some of which will be overtime.
  • Proven organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Illustrate a proven track record of successfully providing exceptional customer service.
