The Kim Laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, is seeking a Research Technician III to support lab management and pursue research projects. This position will be ideal for recent college graduates to gain research experience before advancing to graduate school or other opportunities. Individuals at different career stages and objectives are encouraged to apply if the job description fits with their background and goals. The ideal start date is July 1st, but is flexible by one or two months.


This job will provide an opportunity to work closely with the principal investigator, learn various experimental and computational techniques, and receive career guidance from the professor. Depending on the motivation and ability of the individual, successful contributions to the project may lead to authorship in scientific publications. The candidate will be part of cutting-edge research on epigenetic regulation of cell fate, reproduction, and tissue homeostasis.


The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Experimental animal management: mouse breeding, weaning, tissue collection, and genotyping and fruit fly line maintenance.
  • Lab management and maintenance by ordering reagents, keeping inventory of stocks, managing lab chemicals and equipment, coordinating waste pick-up and reagent preparation, and training/supervising new lab members for basic lab protocols and safety regulations.
  • Perform experiments under the guidance of principal investigator to collect data for paper publications and for building preliminary data for future projects.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in Biology, or a related field, and up to 2 years relevant experience or equivalent combination.
  • Ability to work with lab animals, including mice and flies.
  • Proficiency in basic lab techniques and principles of molecular biology required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work independently as well as with other lab members required.
  • Must be proficient in basic computer skills (Microsoft Office suite or equivalent).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field and at least one year of directly related lab experience.
  • Experience in molecular biology, genetics, and genomics in a research lab setting preferred.
  • Experience in basic command line interface and programming languages such as R.
  • Experience with animal husbandry and maintaining mouse colonies and/or fly work.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Important Details about the Position

  • This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.
  • This is a full-time one-year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance.
  • We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.
  • Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.

This position is 39 hours per week. Employees may be required to work outside of normal business hours, including occasional holidays, evenings, and weekends.

Who We Are:

We investigate how chromatin is packaged and organized to regulate gene expression. We are particularly interested in chromatin factors that block the misexpression of unwanted genes to safeguard male germ cell fate. We utilize mouse and fly spermatogenesis as in vivo models to identify new genes involved in silencing and elucidate their mechanisms.
