The Division of Public Safety (DPS) is a group of public safety units that work collaboratively with our community to keep Cornell a safe and secure campus to learn and live. It is comprised of the Public Safety 911 Communications Center, the Cornell University Police Department, the Office of Emergency Management, the Clery Compliance Office, the Access Control Program, the Community Response Team, and the Public Safety Ambassadors.


The Community Response Team is a unit within the Division of Public Safety. This team works in concert with other emergency response resources such as Cornell Emergency Management Services, Cornell Environment Health & Safety, Cornell EMS, Cornell Public Safety Communications Center, and the Cornell University Police.


What you will do:
You will be a part of a team of Community Response Coordinators and clinicians who provide first responder behavioral health services and facilitate resource connection in partnership with individuals in crisis on Cornell's Ithaca campus. This position will respond to calls for service, conduct socio-clinical assessments, make appropriate referrals and handoffs to appropriate wraparound university, city, and county services, and provide interim case management in close collaboration with the Cornell University Care and Crisis Services team. Community Response Coordinators will be expected to work a variable schedule that includes nights, weekends, and holidays and is based upon the needs of the department.


Housed with other first response resources in the Division of Public Safety, the Community Response Team plays a key role across Cornell's health and safety crisis response infrastructure of prioritizing the diversion of individuals in crisis from punitive harm and facilitating their connection to supportive resources. Within that team, Community Response Coordinators aim to serve a broad range of individuals in crisis situations and collaborate within the campus' larger system of care to address the needs of community members, creating an intermediary level between current structures that appropriately balance the response with the need.

You possess exceptional interpersonal skills, empathy and openness to new ideas and perspectives on a wide range of topics. Additionally, you exercise sound judgement and decision making with urgent and sensitive information. You have strong communication skills and build effective working relationships with a broad range of individuals and organizations. You will have knowledge of collaborative techniques and coordinated community response models.


Some other important qualifications for the position include:

  • Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, or another human service-related field and at least 2 years related experience OR an equivalent combination.
  • Two years' experience in social services, mental health care, care (i.e., domestic violence or sexual assault support) or similar health related field.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule that includes nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license in good standing.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Ability to serve as an advocate for individuals of all ethnicities, genders, ages, and backgrounds.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Ideally, you will have experience in social services, mental health care and/or wellness, emergency first response, behavioral health emergencies, crisis care (i.e., domestic violence or sexual assault support) or similar health related field. You will possess of any of the following licenses or certifications: Licensed Master of Social Work (LMSW),Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW),Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC); master's degree in social work/mental health, student affairs/development, health & human services, or similar field. You have lived experience working with youth around crisis, sexual assault survivors and victims, human services case management, and emergency medical services and/or law enforcement agencies. In addition, you will have experience working with diverse publics, preferably in a higher education environment. You are bilingual and/or multilingual.
