Position Title: ASD Behavior Intervention Assistant

Department: Special Education

Reports To: Special Education Supervisor

OVERVIEW

The ASD Behavior Intervention Assistant works under the direction of the GI-RESD ASD Teacher Consultant to provide ongoing support to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implement special education and related services for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
  • Provide instructional and non instructional supports in order for students to be successful in the least restrictive environment o Perform a needed Crisis Prevention Intervention.
  • Participate in physical activities that are apart of the students programming or needs including but not limited to physical education class, recess, working on the floor, restraint, running, climbing stairs and walking.
  • Solve unexpected problems by utilizing a variety of evidence based practices.
  • Collect and report behavior data as directed by the IEP team or ASD Teacher Consultant Participate in team meetings by sharing data and observations.
  • Model and coach school staff in the implementation of behavior intervention plans with fidelity, the collection of behavioral or academic data and the use of other research based strategies.
  • Effectively manage disruptive behavior according to the behavior intervention plan.
  • Attend a variety of conferences and training.
  • Fully engage with students throughout all aspects of the daily school routine o Problem solve with classroom staff, IEP or other team members when problems arise.
  • Effectively communicate with classroom staff, ASD Teacher consultant, IEP team, administrators.
  • Exhibit patience, flexibility and enthusiasm in working with staff and students.
  • Work in assigned locations for the duration of the assignment as determined by the ASD.
  • Teacher Consultant or IEP team.
  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND /OR EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities within a school environment.
  • At least three years of experience working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder preferred.
  • Completion of START training or other researched based intervention system for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder preferred.
  • Ability to drive throughout the entire Gratiot Isabella RESD region.
  • Knowledge of child development.
  • Understanding of Seclusion and Restraint law in Michigan.
  • Experience in collecting reliable behavioral data.
  • A desire to become a START level 1 trainer in Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports.
  • Take direction, show initiative, work with a wide variety of people in a positive manner

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Student supervision

CERTIFICATES. LICENSES. REGISTRATIONS:

  • CPI certification, CPR certification.
  • Valid Driver's License

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
