About the Indiana Office of Technology (IOT):

The Indiana Office of Technology provides cost-effective, secure, consistent, reliable enterprise-technology services to our partner agencies so that they can better serve our mutual customer, the Hoosier taxpayer. IOT will also act as the technology and solution enabler for the State, helping its partner agencies achieve business objectives and innovation.

About the SQL Database Services Team:

The IOT SQL Data Services team manages the data for most of the State’s agency applications. The Department of Revenue, Family and Social Services, and Department of Transportation are examples of agencies with systems that depend upon this team for maintaining their back-end data. Agency applications are dependent upon timely responses to accurate and secure data.

Role Overview:

The SQL Database Administrator supports SQL databases to ensure data integrity, security, and stability. You will provide computer resources and an up-to-date software environment for agency customers. Key outcomes for this role include:

  • Monitoring and tuning database performance.

  • Ensuring data is appropriately protected via database backup, Always On availability, and related strategies.

  • Loading, or assisting with loading, database software, upgrades, and patches.

  • Assisting with evaluating and selecting infrastructure components and providing operational support for the databases, ensuring data integrity, database availability, and performance.

    This senior-level position requires extensive experience with the latest releases of SQL Server. You must be proficient in stand-alone and clustered environments, including implementing and managing the Always On high-availability option.

A Day in the Life:

Essential functions are:

  • Provide operational support for the database ensuring data integrity, database availability, and performance.

  • Ensure that data is appropriately protected via database backup and related strategies.

  • Administer end-user access and security at the database level.

  • Load process database software and the application of fixes.

  • Participate in an on-call rotation that provides 24x7 support.

  • Implement and maintain database catalogs and dictionaries.

  • Monitor and tune database performance.

  • Determine aggregation, partitioning, and indexing strategies for physical data.

  • Develop and advise on standards, guidelines, policies, and procedures designed to ensure the integrity of the database environment.

  • Evaluate and select infrastructure components.

  • Consult with and make recommendations to management and associate user groups to define information processing requirements, evaluate technology needs, and formulate solutions.

  • Develop work plans for assigned projects and supervise their execution.

  • Collaborate and provide technical assistance to other database analyst staff.

  • Prepare reports which assist management in understanding the current hardware/software conditions, performance, and future trends.

What You'll Need for Success:

Able to :

  • Administer various components of SQL Server, with a solid understanding of database architecture and performance tuning.

  • Work with multiple SQL Server versions, such as SQL Server 2016, 2017, 2019, or 2022, in a Windows and/or Linux environment.

  • Administer various multi-terabyte, 24x7 uptime SQL Server databases as a Systems/Infrastructure Database Administrator.

  • Install and configure SQL Server, including automated deployments.

  • Manage database security, users, roles, and permissions in SQL Server.

  • Configure SQL Server Integration Services, and SQL Server Reporting Services.

  • Write SQL scripts, stored procedures, functions, etc. using T-SQL.

  • Manage multiple hardware and software projects and priorities.

    Knowledge of:

  • SQL Server backup and recovery methodologies.

  • High Availability and Disaster Recovery in SQL Server environments using Clustering, Log Shipping, Replication, and Always On.

  • SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and other SQL Server administrative tools.

  • Virtualization platforms such as VMware, Hyper-V, or XenServer.

  • Relational database techniques.

  • Working knowledge of computer programming, including computer languages, and testing of programs.

  • Data communications, including networking and firewall rules.

    Additional consideration for these skills:

  • SQL Server Cloud Deployment model and standards, integration, and onboarding of cloud platforms.

  • Writing PowerShell scripts.

  • Database Monitoring Tools such as IDERA, Red-Gate, and AppDynamics.

  • Data warehouse design techniques and dimensional modeling processes.
