Newell Brands Associate Product Engineer in Huntersville, North Carolina

The Associate Product Development Engineer will be responsible for new product development (NPD) projects for both new and existing products, while working within a cross-functional team. This position is in the Kitchen Division, in the Fresh Preserving group. The development focus will be on the iconic Ball©, Kerr©, Golden Harvest© and Bernardin© brands, building products that help people have confidence that the food they preserve is safe to eat. This position will:

• Lead the engineering efforts for NPD projects from conception through production launch, while following the Newell Brands Product Development Process and meeting expectations for cost, quality, and time.

• Support existing products through cost and quality improvement efforts.

• Require the ability to work effectively with other disciplines including Marketing, Industrial Design, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain.

• Oversee the validation of home canning recipes following industry guidelines (<5% of time).

Key Responsibilities:

• Work in a stage gate process.

• Have a basic understanding of how to determine new product costs, capital expenses, and competitive benchmarking.

• Understand existing technologies used in industry (glass forming, metal stamping, plastic injection molding, appliance development).

• Fundamental understanding of ideation techniques.

• Basic understanding of the importance of intellectual property for an organization.

• Basic understanding of Six Sigma approaches, standard deviations, and process capability (Cpk).

• Basic understanding of metrology equipment used.

• Basic understanding of DFMEA and ability to distinguish between program, safety, business, regulatory, and consumer satisfaction risk.

• Basic understanding of root cause analysis and use lean principles.

• Basic ability to write technical specifications for the development and implementation of new products.

• Basic understanding of executing and creating test methods from identified risks in the DFMEA.

• Defines non-technical deliverables that contribute to successful product releases.

• Basic understanding of design tools to create components and basic assemblies (position has Design Engineering support for Production CAD/drawing creation).

• Contributes to the engineering change management process.

• Work with a cross functional team to validate home canning recipes as the technical lead.

• Ability to support some travel for supplier support for new launches, mainly within the domestic USA. (<10%)

Key Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required.

• 0-2 years in related field required.

• Demonstrates strong knowledge of problem-solving techniques and methodologies.

• Demonstrates hands on prototyping/design validation model building knowledge.

• Demonstrates Strong Static/Dynamic analytical skills.

• Demonstrates minor CAD modeling experience (Creo preferred).

• Demonstrates knowledge of applicable manufacturing processes.

• Demonstrates strong interpersonal and project management skills.

• Demonstrates excellent communication skills-verbal and written.

• Demonstrates ability to perform in a team environment.

• Basic understanding of manufacturing equipment used on our products.

• Basic understanding of major tools and techniques used in manufacturing process.

• Basic understand about how to select a supplier.

• Basic understanding of the materials used in our products.

• Basic understanding of how to identify types of materials used in manufacturing.

• Ability to understand the functional and aesthetic requirements of product design.
