MD Anderson Cancer Center Research Intern - Hematopathology Adm in Houston, Texas
This short-term research intern position offers trainees hands-on experience in cancer research and exposure to a variety of scientific career pathways. Under the mentorship of a designated faculty member, the trainee will work alongside existing laboratory staff to process clinical blood samples, perform molecular analyses on patient and research specimens, and support laboratory operations. Additional responsibilities may include isolating nucleic acids, conducting imaging procedures, and assisting with basic mammalian cell culture techniques.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The trainee will gain foundational knowledge in laboratory coordination. This includes operating scientific equipment such as a tissue imaging microscope, processing tissue sections from paraffin blocks, and performing tissue staining following established protocols. The trainee will also become familiar with clerical responsibilities such as completing applications and forms, managing documentation, and acquiring and distributing paraffin blocks. Additionally, the trainee will learn to retrieve and upload sample-related data using institutional information systems, including Epic and PathStation.
The trainee will be introduced to fundamental research laboratory operations. Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, they will assist in the procurement of biospecimens and the collection of tissue samples in accordance with approved protocols. Responsibilities include processing and storing human samples, such as separating blood components and isolating cells from bodily fluids. The trainee may also participate in processing liquid biopsy samples for the extraction of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), exosomes, or circulating tumor cells (CTCs), and will maintain cancer cell lines using sterile techniques.
The trainee will participate in a research project focused on evaluating the diagnostic potential of peripheral blood specimens in patients with myeloid neoplasms presenting with monocytosis. Under guided mentorship, the trainee will receive training and hands-on experience related to the project's objectives and methodologies.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
The ideal applicant will have studies in molecular biology to include hematological malignancies involving western blots, PCR, immunohistochemistry and tissue culture.

POSITION INFORMATION
This position (full-time or part-time) provides a stipend between $28,000 and $36,000.05/05/2025
