The anticipated salary range for this role is between $237,000.00 and $263,000.00. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.

Role Description

The Energy Department Americans Division is looking for a Relationship Manager to join the team who will be responsible for the execution of the strategic direction and client relationships within the energy sector. This person will help to develop profitable new business in the Energy industry vertical and the wider SMBC organization. This position will assist in leading origination efforts and co-ordination of activities related to the retention and up-sell opportunities to our strategic clients and drive broader cross-sell opportunities for the Bank.This position will be responsible for executing against the strategic plan set forth by the Managing Director (MD). This person will maintain and grow the Energy portfolio and provide leadership and direction to deal teams. The relationship manager will ensure coordination of due diligence and work-flow of team members, deliver a positive customer experience, manage risk and elevate risk related concerns, and comply with bank regulations and internal policies and procedures.

Role Objectives: Delivery

  • Deliver value-added financing solutions to existing and prospective clients to augment client relationships and obtain transaction mandates

  • Manage client relationships effectively to improve results and meet revenue targets; responsible for key accounts

  • Contribute to ideas and assist in implementing business strategy for the team to up tier client relationships, increase penetration in the Energy sector and maximize profitability

  • Manage the current client portfolio and develop new relationships in order to create growth opportunities and maximize return on risk assets and minimize credit loss

  • Work with product specialists and subject matter experts across the bank to structure customized solutions that meet clients’ unique needs

  • Leverage the expertise and capabilities of other SMBC businesses in alignment with the strategy of the Bank

Qualifications and Skills

  • Deep knowledge of the Energy sector and understanding of credit and the Bank's full suite of products

  • Expert knowledge of loan structuring, pricing dynamics and debt capital structure across corporate ratings grid

  • Proven ability to originate and close deals complex deals, develop creative financing solutions, cross-sell bank products and manage risk

  • Deep ability to build a network of relationships across SMBC to obtain a detailed understanding of the overall needs of our corporate clients globally to facilitate seamless execution

  • Ability to develop and maintain a strong network of C-suite level contacts with high profile and strategic clients

  • Deep understanding of market trends with the ability to react quickly to changing market conditions

  • Able to work with and earn credibility with senior management and is viewed as being collegial, collaborative and a value-added partner in a matrixed organization

  • Expert knowledge in regulatory framework in the region and well versed in internal policies and procedures

  • Demonstrated business development skills and proven ability to lead a deal team

  • Understanding clients M&A strategy and generate ideas along those lines to further integrate investment banking collaboration
