Job Summary:
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) in the Ambulatory Surgery Center at MD Anderson Cancer Center provides essential support in perioperative patient care. The PCT ensures a safe, clean, and efficient surgical environment, assists clinical staff, and upholds institutional policies and procedures to maintain excellence in patient care and safety. The ideal candidate will have 1 year of Nursing Assistant experience in an acute care facility or 2 years of Nursing Assistant experience in other healthcare settings.

Accountability:
Efficiently utilizes time by completing assigned responsibilities and seeking additional assignments when available.
Contributes to on-time surgical starts and turnover efficiency.
Demonstrates composure and professionalism under pressure.
Properly stores all supplies and equipment post-procedure.
Participates in cost-saving initiatives and minimizes waste of supplies and resources.
Completes annual self-appraisal and required documentation.
Essential Performance Functions:
Prepares and maintains the surgical environment for assigned patients.
Provides direct patient care in alignment with performance standards.
Cleans and turns over operating rooms (OR) and prepares them for the next case.
Assists with patient transport and supply management as per standard procedures.
Ensures proper cleaning and preparation of the OR at the end of the last case.
Initiative & Skill Set:
Assists in admitting patients to the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
Maintains AHA BLS provider certification.
Promotes a safe care environment by effectively handling, maintaining, and disinfecting equipment.
Cleans/disinfects cardiac monitoring cables, stretchers, and wheelchairs, returning them to designated areas.
Adheres to aseptic technique principles when providing patient care.
Ensures accurate patient identification according to institutional policy.
Escalates patient safety concerns to charge nurse or leadership team.
Assists with obtaining and recording vital signs, applying EKG leads, and measuring oral temperatures.
Enters patient information into the Central Monitor and prints EKG strips.
Ensures bedside table, telephone, and call light are within patient's reach.
Assists with patient mobility, including ambulation and positioning.
Provides nourishment to patients as directed by clinical staff.
Assists with patient discharge and transfer processes.
Empties drains and Foley catheters, removes peripheral IVs, and documents in the electronic health record.
Assists patients and families with gathering personal belongings.
Ensures timely and safe patient transport to and from perioperative areas.
Orders SCDs, pillows, linens, and supplies by 2:00 PM.
Enters patient charge sheets into POU scanning by 2:00 PM.
Disposes of disposable equipment, trash, and suction canisters appropriately.
Conducts supply inventory audits and manages expired items.
Handles and transports lab specimens and samples promptly.
Actively participates in unit-level shared decision-making models.
Identifies barriers to patient care and contributes to problem-solving initiatives.
Engages in educational events and competency check-offs.
Supports and promotes change management within the unit.
Participates in performance improvement projects.
Other Duties as Assigned:
- Completes additional responsibilities as designated by leadership to support the unit's needs and objectives.
Education
High school diploma or equivalent.
Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
